Pinion bolt
Rear end secrets
Changed the subject. Should this be in another forum over here?
Help.
I need your help desperately and the guys at tccoa.com said you were geniuses.
I am in the process of helping my sister with a bent axle. When I took out the pinion bolt it had sheared off inside the hole.
How do I get that out. I cannot tell if there are any threads left however I do not think there is. I tried a magnet albeit not a very strong one and it wouldn't pull out.
Any secrets over here?

If you mean the bolt for the pinion shaft, the small one on the carrier that you have to remove to get the shaft out to push the axles in to remove the C-clips, then you need to break it. It threads into the carrier and has a shank that goes through the shaft. The only way I know how to get it out is by using a large punch and large hammer. Strike the pin sharply with the punch and hammer until the shaft pushes towards the back of the axle housing. Make sure the shaft is angled upwards as far as possible so you don't hit the pinion gear with it. Once you get this out you may have to remove the remaining portion in the carrier with an easy-out. You can also try an air hammer if you have one. Good luck.
We did it.
Went to a dealer and he offered many suggestions but I had to resort to the most drastic. Use a die grinder to cut the other side of the pin.
So then I had to replace the pin and carrier.
I guess I could have tried your suggestion but as a need for speed I had to do something and that grinder and replacement was in in less than an hour, this after spending 2 days trying to be gentle.
Thanks
