oil on spark plugs

so im having problems getitng my 350 from this freind of mine. so ive decided to fix this motor for now to get it off to the paint shop.. its a 86 camaro 305 v8. i can run the car for about a hour or so.. if that.. and if i shut it off.. it wont start back up cause the spark plugs are so gummed up with oil and gas. what is the most likly cause of the spark plugs being gummed up? piston rings i hear is a good bet.. just wnated to see what problems you guys have with the 305.. thanks alot. and for whatever you reply what is the average cost of the item??i have the book and am going to start to rip apart the motor tommorrow? thanks again

Re: oil on spark plugs

sounds to me like you might be getting gas in your oil. this will cause the oil to be more viscuous, or thinner, and it will leak into the combustion chamber via the piston rings and valve stem seals, which would gum the plugs. to check this, pull your dipstick and hold a lighter up to the oil on it for a few seconds. if it flairs up, gas in the oil. if not, you have a different problem. the cause of gas in the oil is usually a bad pcv valve.

It may very well be valve stem seals but I'm not sure

Re: oil on spark plugs

Ill bet money it is valve stem seals. When mine went on my lt1 there was oil clumps all over the spark plug(s) which were effected. Replace the seals and clean the plugs and see if it continues.
