New Engine Oil Priming!!
New Engine Oil Priming!!
Hi...The motor I have is a GM 350 crate motor. I have not started it yet. I was told that I need to prime the motor. If you all have suggestions I would really appreciate it. It is hard for me to find a good mechanic that is reliable..so if proper instructions I believe I can carry this one out....Thx everyone!!!
Re: New Engine Oil Priming!!
Get an old distributor and strip the guts off the top until you only have a shaft. Grind the teeth off the cam gear. That's now your primer. Install the primer into the distributor hole until it engages in the oil pump. Install an electric drill on the shaft at the top and spin the primer.
You need the main body of the distributor so that it seals the oil galleries at the camshaft. If you don't grind the teeth off the distributor gear, you won't be able to spin the shaft.
Priming a new engine is always a good idea but if it was assembled properly, there's lots of assembly lube in the engine to survive a dry startup. Just make sure the oil filter is full before trying to start the engine.

You don't need to grind the teeth off the cam gear. Just nock out the pin holding the cam gear on and remove it all together.
Spin the shaft with the drill for 10-15 seconds then with a socket on the crank bolt turn the motor over 1/4 of a turn.Repete till you have spun the motor 1 full revolution.
By the last time you use the drill spinning the primer you should now have oil comming out of all the pushrods.

Re: New Engine Oil Priming!!
Just hit the NAPA or Auto Zone, etc. and get a priming tool. They are not too expensive, and you don't have to worry about possibly damaging the distributor (especially if you don't have a spare to tear apart).
Rotate the crank like Transambill said, and you'll be good to go.
Good Luck

Re: New Engine Oil Priming!!
autozone has a loaner tool program, u buy the tool, you use the tool, you return the tool, it costs you nothing
also you should turn the motor 2 full revolutions to ensure that the camshaft rotates one full turn
if u mark the dstributor before u pull it out, you can doubly ensure u put it in right
