Question Need help picking out a 350 crate

Ive been thinking about buying an assembled short block. Here are the 2 different ones ive been thinking about.

L31 vortec 350 $1199.95
4 bolt 350 1 piece seal
5.700 p/m rods
3.480 cast nodular crank
4VR dish cast pistons (-13cc)

zz4 350 $1895
same block
same rods
forged 1053 steel crank
Hypereutictic 4VR flat top (-6cc)

They also charge 500 bucks on top of this price to blueprint the short blocks do you think I should go ahead and do this?

I plain to eather put a set of vortecs or fastburns on top of this engine. It must be able to pass emissions. Also this will be a TPI setup ontop. With all this in mind what cam should I go with?

Last thing is how long can one of these engines sit before I stick it in my car?

Any thoughs or sugestions are welcome thanks

i would go with any of the ZZ"x" style 350's. u said u want to add some vortec or fastburn heads. well if u buy the vortec 350.. y r u going to add vortec heads to it when it already has it. plus i beleive GMperformance parts has a "fast burn" 350 *or 355, not sure* but its basically the zz4 engien with fastburn heads on it. s far as balance and blueprinted.. i would.

EDIT: as far as sitting.. last i checked, they come in a crate with 1 qt of oil in the oil filter.. so id think it would be find for a few months.

GM has the fast burn 385. zz4, a 330 hp 350, a 280 hp 350, ls1 and i think that's that for small blocks.

as far as picking one of the two you mentioned, i'd go with the ZZ4. i've heard many people say they love that motor.

I would go with the zz4, edlebrock e-tech heads, and a GM performance parts HOT cam. This would allow your' car to have the idle of a street car but when you get on it, it will be fast as hell!

Also if that is the stock T-5 transmision I would either have it rebuilt or buy an all new tranny because those factory 5 speeds have low torque ratings and with the torque that the 350 would put out it would rip that tranny apart.

Unless you are adding a big power adder, a cheap shortblock is a cheap shortblock. Good machine work is really the only thing that is a concern. I'd do the L31. Grab a set of E-Tec 200 heads, a 230/236 duration/.550" lift cam from Comp Cams, a decent intake and cab, a set of headers, and it should actually scream.

Goodluck man!!

I'd stay away from the L31 Vortec engine. Those -13cc pistons are killer on the compression ratio. I am currently running that engine, and when I put my Trick Flow 67cc heads on, I had to run a .028" head gasket, just to get a 9.2:1 compression ratio.

Other than the pistons and crank, they are about the same engine...
