Mystery switch/sensor??

Ok i have an 89 Camaro RS, 305 TBI with a serious overheating problem. the problem is, the electric fan sending unit (switch?). now after consulting the chiltons book and some guys at the parts store, this unit is nowhere to be found. where is it???? the new part itself looks like the temp. sensor located under the exhaust manifold but has a black mushroom lookin top on it. same thread size and everything. it is not located near the water neck since i just changed the 2 pin sensor to the left of it. so does anyone know where this can be found????
