My 96 Z smokes more than I do.. Help
HELP
So I just picked up a 1986 Z-28 with a 305, 4bbl carb and a five speed. The motor has 100000 miles on it. It smokes bad all the time. Compression is good on all eight cyl. Whats the problem - Valve guides, rings, bad intake manifold gasket?
Should I just replace rebuild the motor.

Rings can be a problem on the 305, however your compression check would have indicated if they were bad. Valve guides are a possibility. Are you "losing" coolant or oil over time. Could just be a bad EGR valve. Lots of variables. Do you think the engine is warn out? Have you driven it "hard" over the years? One fairly easy check is to pull the valve covers and see if any of the oil return holes are clogged, or if it's nice and clean.
Repair or replace depends on your relationship with your mech. or shop. Replacing the short or long block is usually easier and faster.
