My 89' IROC 350's exhaust system, what do you think?
I just saved up enough cash for an exhaust system for my IROC so here is what I'm going with: Shorty edelbrock headers(1 5/8?), offroad y-pipe, 3' flowmaster catback. What do you guys think? I know I won't gain a lot of horsepower from it. I'm getting the exhaust because A) I want my car to sound good B) Exhaust is always the second mod I do, the first being CAI. So does it sound like a good set-up??? Would having no cats cause any problems or make me lose HP? If so I'll rework the set-up. Thanks for the input
Re: My 89' IROC 350's exhaust system, what do you think?
Honestly I would say save maybe a few bucks more and get some hedmans dude. THe edelbrocks have a crappy design and they clamp down on the primaries where the all come together at the collector. The y-pipe does the same. Any other brand, hooker, hedman, slp.... do not do this.
As far as power, you will definitely gain a bit. You might not feel it, but assuming your car is stock now, I would bet it will pull harder and you'll be able to tell a difference. But trust me, if you are going to go through the trouble of installing headers, you might as well do it once and put some in there that you will really be happy with. I say try the hedmans or hookers, since slp's might be a little on the high side of things.

Plutonium,
What was your first mod again? CAI? What does that stand for? I have a similar posting to you going on debating the usage of shorty vs. long-tube headers. This is my first real mod, aside from removing AIR sytem. I'm just curious what CAI is and if I should do it next.

Expensive, but a better setup. 1 3/4 SLP SS Headers, 3" in & out Catco Cat and 3" SLP SS Catback exhaust out 2 1/2" oullets on the left side. All Stainless Steel.
Re: My 89' IROC 350's exhaust system, what do you think?
I WILL change the headers from edelbrock to headman, but everything else is staying the same. I'm still gonna go with flowmaster catback. But what about the Offroad Y-Pipe. Would I gain power if I used a I high-flow cat or should I go cat-less???
Re: My 89' IROC 350's exhaust system, what do you think?
By getting rid of your *stock* cat, yes, there is a TON of power to be made. If you get an aftermarket hi-flow race cat, there will be little to no power-loss w/ one. Here in NY, you NEED a cat in order for any muffler shop to even *look* at fixing your exhaust, so I said "F*ck it".. they wanna be gay f*ckers like that, then I will get a race-cat which is more or less a fat-pipe designed to *look* like it does something
