modifying my 383..need some advice

ok, I need to replace the gear drive timing set with a regular timing chain...what kind do I get? and I want to replace the timing cover with a 2 piece, so if and when I ever do a cam change I can get to it without having to remove the whole cover.. what kind do I get? also what timing tab?

Also, the damper that is on there now is I think a 6.5" ..dont I need an 8" or 400 crank damper? what kind of damper do I get?

I figure I would ask you guys since Im new to the 383 world..

Ive got money in my paypal account so preferably somewhere I can use paypal.
thanks!

I just read on an other forum that you cant change the balancer without getting the whole thing re-balanced again? true? will the 6.5" balancer work with my 383?

Just as a data point for you to consider, I just bought a billet timing set from Summit for my 383 build, & I got it for only $55. I know you can definitely go cheaper than that for a regular set, but that's not a bad price for it. Give them a call, let them know what you're wanting to do, they can probably point you in the right direction.

Re: modifying my 383..need some advice

You might want the Hex-a-just timing set if you're trying to somewhat modify where your cam makes power.

For me, the timing set I got was "good enough for what I'm doing" (allows "straight up", & 4˚ adv/retarded), since I haven't yet bought my cam & I can still specify exactly what I want. I think I remember that the Hex-a-just set was like $80, & I just didn't want to spend that much on a timing set...

I'm sure that others will chime in here too who have more experience, so you'll get better answers...

EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing - In exchange for my information, I expect you to post a reply that has the brand, part # & price for a 2-pc timing cover that works with our roller-cam blocks!
