LT1 intake swap maybe?

im looking into changing intakes on my 87 IROC sometime fairly soon and i might have emissions soon so ill need an EGR valve, so the HSR is out of the question, the super ram is a bit pricey so i was think about at LT1 intake swap.

it will bolt to my stock heads correct?
does any1 have any good links on the swap, what ill need, whats involved, etc. im not really sure if i wanna do it yet b/c of changing the computer, wiring harness and all that BS.

any1 have any YAYS or NAYS about this intake? my mods are in the sig.

thanks for any input

I am doing your said swap with the Lt1.

You do NOT have to cahnge any computer, wiring or anything to run the Lt1 intake. All your TPI stuff will work fine, but it's best if you have a perf prom chip, or some other beefed up ECM.

You will in no WAY be able to pass emissions with an LT1 on your car because you have to remove the EGR.

It doesn't directly bolt up, you have to modify some holes, add coolant passages and a dist. hole.

All in all it is a REALLY cool thing to do, but it'll be a little more involved tahn just swapping one on there.

If you're looking for easy, the Stealth Ram is very good, although i will say that i personally think the LT1 is going to perform better in the long run.

Check out www.Lt1intake.com He's got a step-by-step with color photos of what you'd need to do. He also sells them totally finished for $400. I was looking into it, but i've decided to modify my own. If you go this route, perhaps we can swap tips! Hahaha.

I say YAY, but look out for emissions!!!

Kraft: Boy you and me sure have the same ideas don't we. I've been thinking about an LT1 Intake swap, I'll check that page out in just a sec. Will she pull all the way to 5000+ like the LT1 does? How do you think it'll affect low/mid hp and tq? Ok, time to check out that site...

Rippin:

from what i've heard, the Lt1 on the L98 motor is good to about 6 grand (beyond redline), due to the L98 heads being a little less thirsty than the Lt1 heads. I'm not real sure about what happens to the powerband or how the curve goes, but it's supposed to be about a 30ish max hp gain, and about an additional 35 max ft lbs of torque. Who knows...i guess we'll see in a few weeks...

It's definitely cool to hear that i'm not the only crazy one out there who's willing to try just about anything! Haha.

I'm pickin up my LT1 intake from a local dude this weekend, then i gotta get my hands on some fuel rails and i'll be good to go! Can't wait to get her goin. Let me know if anyone is lettin some rails go cheap!

The LT1 intake will pull until you have to shift, but it's going to cost you some bottom-end torque because of the oh-so-short runners.

What is the cost after you figure all the machine work required?

well, you can the machining yourself. You only would ahve to cut into aluminum, no alum weld (eek) or anything. Should be able to be done very well in a few hours with a $7 hole saw from craftsman and a good drill press. Did you check out the link above??? The description of the project is very well detailed and the pictures are very easy to follow. Additional costs come in with the coolant nipples, external therm. housing and then a few coolant hoses. Perhaps $20 of customizing to do?

Basically, there shouldn't be much added cost except for fuel lines, which aren't really part of the intake anyway... I'm picking up my intake on sat, and i'll be starting the process then. I'll post up all my details. Till then, check out the link above

What I am trying to figure out is if you take it to a shop to get it professionally done and ported so it works as well as a miniram, what is the cost. Otherwise, we are comparing apples and oranges

So intake (modified) and fuel rails (stock?). With those 2 parts it's a bolt in project? Are the TB's from both cars the same? Does anyway have a dyno graph of an L98, or any sbc w/ the LT1 intake on it?

That is true, and i cannot say for sure. I haven't found many people who run the LT1 intake to get a good idea. What kind of numbers does the mini ram put out, and how much does it cost?

Rippin: yes, slightly modified intake with stock runners.
