Idle quality is set by your IAC and ECM. You could put it in, get a custom EPROM and they could make it idle.

It will sound like a LT1.

BTW, I've got a stock 97 LT1 cam if you're interested.

in all honesty, if your gunna do it and go through the agravation, you should really go with something bigger. You have a 350, so you have a great building block for super performance. Now im not saying something like the LPE 219, but the ZZ4 cam is a larger cam then the LT1, and you will have a good idle and even better power. ZZ4 cams can be found for about the same price as a LT1. I am going with a ZZ4 in my 305. You will gain great streetability and good performance. Just a suggestion.

i did the lt1 cam in my l98. then i did the zz4 cam. picked up 20hp. here are my graphs

http://www.fl-thirdgen.org/mrr23/ima.../dyno14-15.jpg

Here is a comparison of the (dyno 14)LT1 cam, siamesed stock base, stock runners, 86 ECM and 22# injectors versus (dyno 15)ZZ4 cam, Edelbrock base, siamesed SLP runners, 87 ECM and 24# injectors. The peak torque is down because the lt1 cam peaked below 2800 RPM. But past 2800 RPM it has picked up. HP has a gain of 35hp at 5000 RPM. Torque has a gain of 35 ft-lbs at the same 5000 RPM. So, don't just go by peak numbers. Always look at the entire curve.

if your gonna drop in a cam, do it right. get yourself a nice cam (comp cams 08-502-8 if your running tpi, 08-503-8 if your running the hsr, ltr's, mr or sr), springs, and a new prom.

installing the lt1 cam would be a waste of time... if you're gonna do it, like i said, go all out and do it so you gain as much as you can from the cam. i'd also suggest either porting out your heads or getting new heads for cheap and then porting them out even more. stock l98 heads are very restrictive

i agree, if your going through the porcess of a cam swap then you might as well get something a little more radical, zz4 or something else. from what i know the LT1 and L98 cams are very similar so the gains will only be minimal, good luck.

i think you'd see more gains by switching to 1.6 rr's than you would from putting in the lt1 cam.

My LPE 219 cam with 1.6 RR will idle just fine after getting the EPROM done. That is something you will need anyways. AFAIK, it is a PITA to do a cam switch so make it worth the while.

I might be experimenting with a new camshaft this summer and the HSR so if you can wait till then, I can tell you what the new cam feels like

doing a cam swap, on a 305 tbi atleast isn't all that bad, and if you really work could be done in a weekend. with a helping hand it makes it much easier, a friend of mine swapped cams in his RS and it took us only a couple days, and we could have done it quicker but didn't work very diligently. but i dont think i would want to go from L98 to LT1 then decide it wasn't worth it and have to do it over again. it's not quiet that easy.
