Lt1

Hi everyone
I am new to the forum. I have a 1991 Z28 that is stock for the most part. Does anyone know when chevy started to put the LT1 engine in camaros. A friend of mine has a 86 Z28 with a LT1. From the info that I have found they did not use LT1's in 1986. So then I would think that someone put the LT1 engine in it later. I have had camaros before but am know just starting to find out more info on them. Thanks for any info.

Travis

I'd be skeptic about it being a complete LT1 engine. It's likely that he, or someone else, did the LT1 intake swap. but it is possilbe he has the whole LT1 engine. But they started in 1993 in the fbodies, and 92 in the Vettes.

Easy way to tell if it's a true LT1 or just an intake: look for the tell-tale distributor. If it has a distrib. in the back it's just an intake swap, or maybe intake and heads if they were really ambitious (that takes some welding on the heads.) If it's got an opti-spurt behind the water pump, it's a true LT1.

Good point. Look for the opti spark on the front of the engine, or the lack there of distributor on the back of the engine.

I'd check the heads. I know of zero LT1 head'ed cars running. If it's got LT1 heads, 99.9% it's an LT1.

Yes, but then it's not really a "true" LT1. You'd have to modify the wiring harness, drill the intake, figure out the wiring etc. etc. You may even have to change ECMs so it will recognize the cam position signal from the distributor (instead of crank position from the opti.) It changes the whole nature of the beast.
