LS1, or LT1

Ive been looking into getting a motor for my 85 for awhile now. Was planning on going with LT1.. but now im lookin at LS1's..

So my question is, besides the cost of the motor themselves how much extra am i looking to spend to get a LT1 bolted up to the 3rd gen, and how much to get a LS1 bolted up. Thanks guys.

Also i lookin at the t56's and i already have 5 speed which of course im not using, but can i use the t5 pedals? i know all the other stuff i need to change, crossmember etc... but can i get the hydralics to hook to the pedal correctly? thanks.

I can't answer the other questions you have, but from everything I've read about the 3rdgen T-56 swap, the stock T-5 pedals will work just fine. As soon as I bring my other workstation back on-line (hopefully today), I can give you a link that lays it out step-by-step...

If you must swap a newer motor, I'd go with the LS1. LT1 is too much trouble for too little gains, IMO. Of course, that being said, I would max out the motor or it would be in the plans for future. If you are going to just drop it in, the LT1 would be a good swap. Once you max both motors out, you will find that the difference is about 20 HP in favor of the LT1. This is a number I have got from talking to different tuners.

Errr... No offense aklim, but that has GOT to be a typo! With all of the advantages they've designed into the LS1 (hollow core camshaft for reduced reciprocating weight, etc.), that just does not seem right...

Re: LS1, or LT1

LT1 sounds nicer and is louder but the LS1 creates more power.

I have a LT1, but I personally would with the LS1 if it wasn't TO MUCH more... because just weigh the money/power ratio. How fast you want to go... But generally I would think the LT1 is better because its cheaper and you could throw in headers and make it just as fast, but then again... if you went with the LS1 and threw on headers, you would be running mid 12's... if you're going to do the swap, go with the LS1. Stock vs stock, LS1's have 30-50 hp over an LT1. No if, ands, or buts about it. Stock for stock an LS1 will completely walk away from an LT1 in any gear, rpm, or speed. Go for the LS1 .

OK. I didn't make myself clear. When you max ou the L98 and the LT1, the LT1 comes out maybe 20 HP at the max, ahead of the L98.

It won't take a LT1 through 1st and maybe half of 2nd... they wreck the LT1 up top.

Re: LS1, or LT1

What goals are you after? Just swap and go? Or being a built combo?

If its just a stocker, then the LS1 is the way to go. But if you plan on building it, why not go with the LT1. Heads/Cam LT1 will run with a heads/cam LS1. LS1's are a lot lighter though, if you plan on doing some twisties.

I have seen both swaps up close and both have there cool factor. Really, either way you can't loose.

Re: LS1, or LT1

Well i am going to heads/cam it. I figured LT1 would be an easier swap and a little cheaper thats why i planned on going with it in the first place.

Just thought id ask around and maybe get opinions on if its really that much easier.

Dollar for dollar and trouble vs trouble an LT1 vs LS1 in a thirdgen, unless you're trying like hell to do the LS1 on the cheap, the LT1 will come out ahead.

Hmm, I've heard some pretty good soundin' LS-1's!

If I were you and I could afford it, go with the LS1. The LT1's seem to have more problems, and just aren't as powerful as an LS1. Also, the LS1 is an aluminum block, a huge weight savings over the iron block LT1.

Re: LS1, or LT1

If you can afford it, go for the LS1. The weight savings and power potential are awesome! An LS1 with normal accessories weighs about 150 lbs less than a standard sbc with normal accessories.

The LS1 is a fully computer designed engine, and is most technologically advanced pushrod engine out there. I am currently helping a friend swap an LS1 and a powerglide into his '83 Z28.

Check out the Hybrid section of LS1Tech.com for all the info you could ever need on this swap.

I was gonna say, an LS1 is a badass pushrod motor. I have personally seen a stock crank LS1 run in the 9's over and over again. LS1 owns. Hands down.
