Looking to build fast 350TPI, any suggestions??
I'm currently looking to buy a 3rd gen camaro. I previously owned a 1989 Rs (305TBI) but now i own a 1990 honda accord
. Anyways im looking for either an IROC-Z or Z-28, and would like to find one with the L98 350 package in it. I have around $5,000-$7000 to spend, including modification costs. Im hoping i can pick up an iroc for around $3000 and put the rest into engine/trans.
My first few priorities for building up the 350 are..
1.Heads($700-$1000)
2.Cam(not sure which kind i'd like)
3.Stealth Ram intake($350)
4.Nitrous????!!
(somewhere in there i need rear end gears)3.73's???
What i need to know is, Is it possible for me to build a 12-13sec third gen with $7000 to spend??(including prioce of car)
Any idea's or suggestions on the horsepower helpers??
I really need to get an idea on what im trying to build before i buy my next camaro. Any and all help is appreciated.

i got my 90 iroc-z for 2700$... make sure that you get an L98 with dual cats. it should have an RPO code of G92. first do all the free mods, then do all the bolt ons. then go for the internal engine crap like heads, cam, roller rockers, lifters, springs, pushrods, new pistons... probably should get a new crank. rebuild the engine so that when you decide to spray nitrous, your engine will be able to stand the nitrous
www.thirdgen.org , you should be able to find some articles on mods.
http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/tpimod1.shtml that should help you some as well. the more you visit this site, the more you're going to figure out what you want to do with your car. seriously though, start off by getting the car. then get yourself some ac ducting tubes and build your own free ram air. then, tb bypass, remove the smog pump, get some under drive pulleys, new ignition coil with new cap and rotor, new 8.8 mm spark plug wires and some new plugs. then get yourself an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and set it at 45 psi (stock should be around 42). take the intake out, get a dremel and port out the blocks behind the throttle body. get yourself an air foil as well to help the air flow into the intake. adjust your IAC and TPS back to stock, because with time, they tend to adjust to the wrong settings. if you dont have to pass the sniffer, just get some long tube headers with an off road (no cats) y pipe... taking out the cats alone will net you about .2-.3 on the 1/4 mile... header will do probably the same, so getting long tubes with no cats should help you out with more than half a second on the 1/4 mile. get yourself an exhaust (dont go flowmaster, they're good for sound, not for flow). shift kit (good for a few tenths) and a torque converter (good for about half a second on the 1/4 mile) with a good stall speed. look for a car with the G92 option, like i said, because they come with 3.23 gears
get yourself some ET streets or nitto drag radials, and you'll be hitting mid 13's for sure. probably into the low 13's, but thats if you tune your car really well. your fuel pump might die, so get yourself an aftermarket one that can hold a lot of psi. ur probably going to notice your car overheats, so you should do a radiator flush and put in a 180 or 160 thermostat. i'd suggest 180 unless you live in a place where the weather is around 90 degrees every day. ur car should read between 160-180 degrees after it warms up.... thats ideal, IMO. anything after that, i feel the car losing power. when it starts to overheat (more than 220 degrees), the extra heat will kill some power. when your done with all those mods, then you get yourself a mini ram intake (gives you some top end hp that tpi cant touch), a bad *** cam and some AFR heads... you'll be hitting 11's for sure without nitrous.
if you wanna spray nitrous though, i'd suggest for you to rebuild your engine with forged parts (it isnt as hard as it sounds... and its worth it if you have a lot of milage on your block) so you dont blow anything if you spray.... it would suck *** if you put countless of hours and nights working on your car just to blow it because you didnt think of safty, wouldnt it? im not touching my car with juice till she's been built to take it. if you rebuild your engine, you could take a 250 shot without a problem... i've seen it done. does it mean you should do it? no... crazy ppl do it, if your sane, you should stick with a 150 shot, lol.
right there if you do all the things i listed, you'd be pretty much untouchable... you'd be killing cars that cost close to $80-150,000... and if you lose to one of those really expensive cars, atlest you know you didnt have to pay $150,000 to be fast
just a few thousand, hehe
if you need any help you can im me, my sn is "smokin iroc z"... peace man

wow, thanks for all the advice. All this camaro talk makes me miss my old 89 Rs. It was a 305 TBI( i know......it was slow, but at least v8) I just want need an idea on where im going with my next project. At first i was thinking 383 Carb, but i really like the Tuned Port set-up. That stealth-ram really looks badass on there.
There are way to many kids that go to my school that think they have fast cars. LOL, like 75% of the kids like those stupid civics with loud, annoying mufflers. But hey, no horsepower!!I hope on showing them what FAST really is.
My best friend has a 90 mustang 5.0 that i'd love to beat.....????
Thanks for the reply
Tim

I thank you a lot, you got the knowledge so imma tap into it.....
1- Are both wheels suppose to spin?
-Wud I have to check the Gear Oil?
2- It push the car side to side from the drivers side i hear a click or dnk and it seems a bit too loose compaired to my 89 RS....cud it possibly be the axle? Because the kid who had it before me said he slid into the curb on the driver side.....maybe that explains why my cars *** end kicks to the right when i nailed it goin from 1st to 2nd (automatic)......
All help is much appreciated

1] both tires are supposed to spin. have someone take a look at it for you while you do a nice burn out. either have 2 friends, one on each side, or you can use one friend and just do two burn outs so he can see each tire once. if one tire spins... then you don't have posi. does posi help? sure does... i think there's a way to change your rear end to posi, but im not sure exactly how. im sure if you do a search or make a new post you can find out.
2] sounds to me like you need new sway bars... i'd save up some flow and get myself some LCA's, sway bars, panhard rods, and sfc's... if the car makes a loud noise every time you hit it off the hole, and it sounds like it's comming from the middle of the car where the tranny would be, it's probably your tranny mount. get a poly mount from discount auto for like 6 bucks, and fix it yourself...http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/te...nnymount.shtml but i dunno if it's your tranny mount or not... i could be wrong... but more times than not, it's been a tranny mount whenever people experience a banging noise when hitting it from a dead stop

i cant stand Mustang's.........period..........
Awww... Thats too bad they really are a fun car.I own a 91 Mustang and a 91 Z28.the mustang will hand the Camaro its A$$ and to me it is funner to drive. Both cars are convertibles and the Camaro is modded more than the Mustang.Watch out for your buddies Mustang it should give you a run even with mods done to your Camaro.
Anyway to actually help with your question my friend built a 86 Iroc with the following specs.
350 with a fresh rebuild, aftermaerket cam specs unknown to me.
Vortec Heads with Crane gold rockers but you have to buy the expensive Scoggin Dickey TPI Base to fit the vortec heads
$400
Edelbrock headers,no cat, flowmaster muffler,52mm T.B. Factory runners and plenum,Rebuilt 700R4,Vigi 3200 stall,12 bolt with 3:73 gears. On street tires he was cutting 2.3 60's(Terrible) and was running 13.30's at 101.Put some ET Streets on that car and it will be in the high 12's easy.that was with full interior also.Needless to say he did nip my Mustang at the track that day by .2 tenthsI ran 13.50 at 100.But with stickies he'd eat me.Just goes to show there is no replacement for displacement. What you are looking for (12/13 sec car is obtainable very easy) Hell My 305 Camaro runs 14.40's if that tells ya anything.Hope I helped ya.

ur friend doesnt know how to drive his car if he's getting 2.3 60' times. i ran a 14.5 and had a 2.1 60' time
Yeah, It's called a 3200 stall and street tires.I ran a 14.40 with a 2.0 60 ft and did it with a 305.Whats your point??Not trying to be a dick or anything but were you there that day to know track conditions/track prep? He'd launch the car real easy cause if he leaned into that much with the stall thats in there, the tires just went up in smoke resulting in worse 60's than that. But if you want to come up here next year when the track opens and show him how to drive,I am sure he would really appreciate that.
I think I would be more worried about why my 350 car is getting beat by a heavier convertible model with a little 305 with basically the same bolt on parts that your car has with the exception of 3:73's compared to your 3:23's. Makes ya wonder does'nt it?
