Are the L98s in Camaros identical in power to the L98s in Corvettes? I thought I had heard at one time that the L98s in Camaros were slightly "de-tuned". Any truth to that? Also, anyone know what gears come stock in the 89 5.7?

Corvette's always had more HP/TQ then the lower priced Camaro/Firebirds. Just GM's policy.

Rear gears for 1989 5.7 TPI were the BW 9-bolt with 2:77 standard & 3:27 as a option. They did have the best rear Disc brakes with the 11.655 rotors & PBR aluminum calipers and a parking brake that worked.

How can I tell if my car has the 3.27 option? I think it does just by seat of the pants, but then again, these engines have so much torque that even a 2. something would get you off the line pretty quickly....

Check your RPO codes.

Check your RPO codes located on the underside of the console lid.
Then get them decoded on www.thirdgen.org. It will be
GH3 for 2:77 & GW6 for 3:27 gear ratios for the BW 9-bolts only available with the 350 TPI L98 engine.

Turns out I have the 2.77 gears. That goes to show just how much torque these cars really have. I have a 99 Cobra with 3.73 gears and my IROC will clobber it off the line even with measly 2.77 gears! But, I'm thinking the 1st gear in the trans must make up for the 2.77 because 1st gear is already pretty short, even with 2.77 rears. Anyone know what the gear ratios are in the trans?

Check out www.thirdgen.org Home page and go to Tech data. It will give all specifications that you want to know.

Just some more clarification on the Vette vs. F-Body L98....

1985 Vette had IRON heads and made 220 hp.
1986 Vette had ALUMINUM heads and made 235 hp.
all 1987-up Vettes had 245 hp. Mainly due to higher cam profile, aluminum heads and free flowing manifolds. The f-cars didn't get that much HP until 1989 with the dual cat option. But they still had IRON heads and a smaller cam

Dual cats were an option? I thought mine had all the options available, but no dual cats. So what is my stock hp rating?

Should be 230 or 235. I don't recall off the top of my head.

I think I remember reading back in 89 that dual cats weren't available w/2.77 diff due to exaust resonance reasons. Single cat 89 L98's were 330 hp. My 89 Formula 350 is a twin cat w/3.27's. Ran a best 15 flat at local 4,100 ft alt track; about a 14.3 corrected. So it doesn't look like the 2.77 diff hurts performance at all. Tranny 1st gear is 3.06.

That 3.06 1st gear explains why the 2.77 doesn't hurt the launch. BTW, I think you meant 230 hp, not 330 hp...

I used to run at a local track (sea level) completely stock running low 14s. Actually, I might have had the chip in at the time which explains why my single cat was running what your dual cat was.
