l98 vs lt1 fuel consumption

Just wondering why the l98 isnt more efficient since its designed for a lower rpm shouldnt it be more efficient there and if not can it be made more efficient with mods or tuning?

Well, its a product of its time. It wasn't really made for economy, more to pass emissions and still maintain a certain level of performance. Mine throws down around 300 miles to a tank combo city/freeway, which is better than most LT1's around here. But I also baby her around most of the time.

I would say an LT1 would be more efficient overall because of advancements in ignition control and higher standards for the EPA. TPI was really the first factory true MPEFI for the f-body, so its understandable the next gen being the LT1 would be "better."

Just my .02 cents

l98's have lean crusie programed in to the chip. It just has to be turned on. That will raise the gas mileage.

The 6spd tranny with it's wicked overdrive 6th gear is the main thing that gives then any mpg gains. The auto LT1 cars get around the the same 17/25ish mpg the L98s were rated at...

Swap in a 6-speed. That bumped my highway mileage from around 20 to about 26-27mpg. And that's behind a CARBED 355.
