Knock sensor is retarding the $hit out of the timing in my car.
I sure hope there isnt anything wrong with the internals or bottom end of my motor. I mean it has about 1,100 miles on it, and i've broke it in properly, and have done 7 oil changes with filter through the breaking in phase. At idle, engine sounds smooth, but This just problem just happened recently, Friday, i was out and couple of imports wanted to race, Gunned it, hit 3rd gear and it seemed that the car just died(As if i hit the brakes really hard) but then for that split second the performace would resume again. A member in Nethirdgen.org has told me that the knock sensor seems to be retarding the timing, if this is true how could i go about fixing the problem. I doubt theres any internal damage, But could a faulty Knock Sensor be the cause? This problem dosent necessarily happen in third gear, It happened yesterday while i was launching it in 1st. Its as if the car falls flat in its face. thanx for any info.
Hook a scan tool up and see if you are getting any engine knock. You are too quick to assume your motor isn't detonating. The Knock Sensot is a 3900k resistor which acts as a microphone. They don't really go bad unless they break physically.
Remember, your knock sensor is there for a reason. It doesn't just send false signals to your ECM for ****s and giggles.

I read somewhere that a knock sensor will pick up noises from an exhaust system and anything else that makes a metallic sound. Check your system for movement.

I should have mentioned this in my first post. If you have an exhaust leak like at your headers for instants, the Knock Sensor could possibly pick that up. Make sure all your exhaust bolts are tight and that there aren't any leaks at junctions. I guess its possible to have things work themselves loose. Retighten everything and then hook it up to a scan tool of some sort.
I hope that thats one of the possibilities. While this was happening i was at a red light with windows down and i could hear as an echo on the passenger side that it seemed that i had a leak. Hopefully thats the issue, The knock sensor is located on the lower passenger side block. The motor is an 87' 305 TPI and the exhaust is edelbrock TES headers to flowmasters. Thanx again guys. Do they have adapters for the scan tool to fit the diagnostic tab.

I had the exhaust smacking the crossmember under hard throttle, and the knock sensor saw it as detonation. With a scan tool connected, I could see the timing being pulled out of the engine as the pipe hit the frame. Might be something to look at.
