Re: just bought 91 rs what mods to do
also who do you think would win in a drag race a v6 mustang 1998, or my stock rs??? i think my power to weight ratio is higher and i i have more torque but im not sure about gears
Re: just bought 91 rs what mods to do
if i were you, i would just buy a nice magnaflow or hooker Catback. make the car sound nice even though hp gains will be minimal. but before you start to mod it. i would recommend a full tune up as im sure the old girl is getting tired. that right there is probably the best way to start. as for the mustang, dont be surprised if it is close, but if your car is running well, you will be fine. got any pics?
Re: just bought 91 rs what mods to do
i will have pics of it up asap , i jsut bought it last saturday and i go to pick it up this sunday, its in carolina im in va and schools still in, i was pretty sure that the stang would be close. thank for the psot already i need as much help as possible
Re: just bought 91 rs what mods to do
First you have to decide if the 305 will be enough for you. I think it will since this is your first car. You can definitely make it pretty quick and dependable. I think getting a full exhaust would be a good first step, headers new cats and a cat back. That would wake the car up well. Also you could get your chip programed as well. I think those would be good as first mods. Other than that just read as much as you can and learn as much as you can about your car so in the future you can make good sound decisions about where you want to go with the car.

For the TBI Motor:
Stay away from these parts, they do NOTHING for performance
Drop in K&N Filters
Underdrive Pulleys
Hypertech "Power Chargers" (soupbowls)
Off the shelf performance chips/Programmers
Tornado Air Swirlers and Electric Superchargers...<------- (lol)
WASTES of MONEY!
Best performance upgrade ever....is a MAJOR Tune-Up.You wont get a major horsepower boost on a budget with just one thing...A combo of mods such as headers and catback will raise your performance, but by themselves they wont do much...

The easiest first thing to do for the 305 TBI motors is to either buy an open element air cleaner or a dual snorkel air cleaner (from an early 3rd gen, generally called "L69 dual snorkels) to replace the factory piece. The factory air cleaner assembly just flat out sucks for airflow. You can get an 14"X3" open element air cleaner for around $30 at any auto parts store.
There are a couple of "free" mods for TBIs. The first is referred to as the "ultimate TBI mods" (see link below for more info). The other free mod is to advance the timing to 4*, considering your running 87 octane. Some people have gotten up to 8* advance, but that's with higher octane gas.
The best (but definitely not the cheapest) modification you can make is to replace ALL of the stock exhaust. Exhaust manifolds, factory catalytic converter, muffler, everything. Get some decent shorty headers (I highly recommend ceramic coating if it's your daily driver) with y-pipe, a single 3" high-flow catalytic converter, and a single 3" cat-back exhaust system. This is the best bang-for-the-buck out their for these motors.
The 305 TBI motors are definitely not high performance motors, but it's a good start. They respond to all the normal mods like exhaust, cams, heads, etc, if you want to go that far with it. As far as gears go, 3.42s are perfect for the these motors. I have 3.42s and love them.
Also, check out the Thirdgen.org TBI board. They have some great info and write-ups on anything you could ever want to do.

Re: just bought 91 rs what mods to do
Well I owned a 96 stang with a V6 that I put a new engine in and just sold, now I own a 86 Camaro Iroc. Let me just tell you that racing that mustang is ganna be like the tourtise racing, well, another tourtise but driving both cars I would diffently have to say ours has the edge.

what does ceramic coating do? and yes its my only car so it will be in constant use. thnx everyone for the quick replys i really appreciate it
Re: just bought 91 rs what mods to do
I agree w/ ben91rs. Full tune up with quality parts (MSD cap, rotor, wires, maybe module, coil for example). Full exhaust. Basic intake mods- air cleaner assembly maybe intake manifold. Chip. Gears (3.42 posi). If auto, I think you would like a good shift kit/servo and eventually a stall (2400-2600). All that should get you into the mid-14's (give or take) which should be able to handle most of your import friends.
