Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

Yeah, I kinda forgot about the turndowns when I remembered about emissions. I do plan on running them out the back. Do they actually test the catylitic converter or do they just look for one? Cause instead of spending a ton of $$$ on 2 hi-flow units, I was figuring I could just get 2 crappy cats out of a scrapyard and gut 'em. Would that work?

I still need answers to the other questions, but I thought I'd let you guys know that I found out today that my car isn't limited slip. Simple brake stand in a parking lot told us that. They don't feel like 3.73 gears either. They're probably something like 3.23 or something. The car did run strong though, so that's a plus.

I'm assuming the 2nd ones, but it was a little un-clear. Would the 2nd one be signifigantly louder then the first?

Sorry for all the questions and I appreciate all the help I've gotten.

Should I go with a 2 1/2" dual exhaust system or a 3"?

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

Well I got an estimate from a shop on a true dual, custom exhaust kit and it was $1,200. Too much $$$ to spend, so I went around looking up exhuast kits and contacting performace shops. A lot of the shop's I talked to reccomended the SLP Power-flo exhaust. They said it actually breathed better then most 2 1/2" true dual exhausts out there, plus it's prety cheap so I like it. Do you guys think Flowmaster exhaust kit would be better to get?

Have any of you used or heard about these exhaust systems? If so were your experiances/hearings bad or good? Also, could someone reccomend a good hi-flow 3" cat for me to get? Thanks.

P.S. Forget about all the above questins above also. I just need help on THIS descision.

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

For an exhaust DEFINITELY take the Flowmaster 40 series. I have that and OH MY does it sound nice. A deep roar when accelerating to let people know you have a nice car, and a purr when cruising so people respect the car. Flowmaster 40 series is a must have in my book .

P.S. Just remembered this, here is another thirdgen forum with exhaust sounds and the muffler type on it. Enjoy!

How about some chambered mufflers from sweetthunder.com about 60 bucks each. A vortec head kit a cc 268h cam and headers

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

I would get some nice mufflers and run a true-dual system, but it's just too expensive. Basically these are my only 2 choices. I also already have headers and nice 2.02 heads. Thanks for the ideas though.

I'd like to get the flowmaster, because I've heard it sounds real nice and I like the idea of a dual-like rear exit, but I've also heard it's restrictive and that kinda turns me off about it. Oh, and BTW, it's an 80 series muffer in the kit.

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

duals are not as restrictive as the flowmaster catback. just get turn downs. I know here in california for turn downs and mufflers you can have duals for $4-500. Duals are the way to go. more flow better sound don't forget an x pipe.

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

I'd really like to go with duals and if you read the beginning of this thread you'll see that. However my car still has to go through emissions and there's no way that they're going to let me run turn-downs, otherwise that's what I'd go with.

I wasn't saying the duals were restrictive, I was saying I heard the flowmaster system supposedly is restrictive.

where'd you hear that from? It's called Flowmaster for a reason, they don't flow any more of any less than any other muffler. Yes a true dual will flow nicely, but a magnaflow will be so close to performance and that goes for any other muffler. Unless they are those high flow race mufflers

I heard it from this board. I never thuoght flowmaster's were restrictive either, however I was told that and since I figured most people know more then I do about camaros, it was true. If that's the case then I guess I'll be getting the flowmaster system!

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

For emissions, they test your exhaust gasses. If you have no catalytic converter or only a gutted one, then you WILL NOT pass emissions. If you still want dual exhaust but no turndowns, just have the pipes exit out of the side of the vehicle, probably right in front of the rear tires. Your car sounds like it already is hooked up extensively. If I were you I would get it painted before worrying about the exhaust.

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

I know, I'm probably going to end up purchasing a hi-flow cat though, to get a little better performance, but still be able to pass emissions.

Is it even legal to have pipes exit before the rear tires? I thought only trucks could have that. Anyways, I found out that I have this muffler on my car right now. It flows pretty good I'm told so I think I'll just keep it. Do you guys think it could be restricting flow any, or is it good?

Re: Just bought an '86 Camaro- What should I do.

Theres some mustang, the roush or saleen I think, that comes stock this way(pipes exit in front of rear tires). Either way, its definately no more illegal than dumps.

Also, as long as you have 3" mandrel bent piping to the muffler you should be fine until you get bigger heads + big cam or a supercharger.
