Iroc Stripes
Iroc Stripes
I'm a large 3rd gen fan. I actually wanted one when i got the 95 bird, and i still want one. but anyway i have done endless research on the availability of options on these cars. Whats sad is that most people give me dirty looks as i banter on and on with useless info.
We have all seen IROCs and IROC-Zs with different stripe colors from the factory. Such as the Red on a white car after 87' and a singal blue stripe on a black car. What controls the color of the stripes in reference to the color of the car? Does anyone have a list or know where i can get a list of the combinations and numbers. (although today many people have changed the stripes color). I notced that GM does have RPOs to control exterior decaling, but nothing on colors. The only option i see listed on F-Body Sheets was the DX3 stripe delete that appeared in 88'.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

thats actually a damn good question! I have seen what your talking about, say a black Iroc either has gold, red, or silver etc. If i had to say , i would say it probably changed as the years went by. Or maybe some of the colors you saw were sticker kits or somthing...
That is a really good question i have never thought about, but i have noticed it.Someone here will be able to shed some light on the subject.

Striping combinations were keyed to the interior color. GM used to mail "restoration packages" with proof of ownership but I understand they no longer do this. Even when it was, it was one package per address and only with proof. These packages listed all color combinations, including "optional" striping colors. First, an exterior and accent (silver or gold), along with an interior color were chosen. From there, the "decal package" was listed with any options. For example, a black 1987 IROC-Z with a black interior got you the gold decal package. If RPO 86A was specified when ordering this car, the gold would be replaced with silver.
Generally speaking, optional decal package colors were few and far between on 1985 - 1987 IROC-Z's. The selection was increased in 1988 (generally) to include yellows, blues and reds. Also, the 1985 - 1987 Z28's without the IROC-Z option had many more colors available -- body colors AND striping.

GM still does do the restoration package thing. I got mine a few months ago for my 86 Z. Tons of info. Just call them up and request one. The will need the Vin and the name of the owner, not much else. Good luck
