Installing starter!!! Help Please

Well last night my buddy had trouble removing his starter from his '86 IROC. I wasnt helping him cause I was busy doing something else but it finally fell out on him. LOL. Well we both tried to get the new one in and it just wont go. He has an automatic and the tranny lines and exhaust seem to be in the way. The solienoid hits the oil pan so you cant turn it to face the right way. I am about to remove the drivers side exhaust to maybe give enough room, but before I do I figured I can ask the pro's here.

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that you have the correct starter? I've never had trouble with a starter not fitting on a sbc....

Take the solenoid off, slide the starter up in, put the soleoid back on, and bolt / wire it all up.

Im the kid with the Iroc, yeh its the right starter they are exactly the same. We thought about taking to solenoid off but thought it would be too much of a pain to get back on with the starter in place. But hey its better than taking the exhaust off. We'll give it a shot, thanks

Re: Installing starter!!! Help Please

You're joking right? I changed the starter on a thirdgen for the first time about four weeks ago. I just unbolted it, pulled it back and turned it to the side and the thing came right out, no looseing the exhaust, removing the solinoid, etc. This was with the stock exhaust. The new one went back in the same way, you don't put it straight in you put it in sideways angled slightly to the back of the car and as you turn it to where it is supposed to be as you push it in.

Oh you gotta be kidding me, you mean I have to angle the thing oh man thanks for the great advice . Ive done a starter on a newer thirdgen with the 2 cat option that was much easier.

I'm not trying to be a dick, just telling you how I got it in because I really don't understand why people have trouble with them, my car is stock and it goes right up their. And this was a single cat car.

I had trouble on my 88 and i ended up loosening up the Y pipe just enough to get it in there.I think i took 2 of the 4 bolts out.this made it much easier.Once you loose it up just pull down on the Y pipe until you get just enough room.It worked for me.

I did the same thing on my 89 Formula 350 twin cat. No way was it coming down without loosening the exaust. Didn't have to mess with the tranny lines.

Re: Installing starter!!! Help Please

Well now that I think about it when I did the starter on the dual cat car the exhaust was off, we just got done putting the motor back in after the rebuild. I can imagine it was a pain putting it in with the exhaust on. And as for my car I took the soleniod off, and it went in nicely.

Thank you eveyone for your help,
