Re: Installing headers on a 3rd gen

can you install shorty headers to a 85 z28 without having to redo the entire exhaust system. if anyone has a part # or just a header name that you can install on a camaros stock exhaust with y-pipe that would be great thanks

There are no headers made that bolt to your stock y-pipe. You need their headers and their y-pipe. Almost all of them will bolt to your stock cat, but its better to put in an aftermarket cat and exhaust at the same time.

Yep. Plus, the stock y-pipes are absolute JUNK

I completely agree - if you look @ the stock exhaust, you'll see that it's not even a "Y" - it's more of a crimped-up, poorly-designed "T". If you were to try to continue to use that, you'd lose 50% - 70% of the value of the headers...

How is this? When my 91 formula was stock w/ the l03, i gained .45 seconds in the quarter from hedmans, true dual 2.5" exhaust. Then i put pacesetter long tubes and ORY pipe and a magnaflow catback on my 96 Z (which has the LT1) and i gained .6 - .7 seconds in the quarter from that alone, which would make the gains from the 350 slightly more.

if you are lookin for good power hookers are great, for price heddman is far superior to edelbrock, and no one ever thinks about using them. i got long tube headers for my 89 for about $150

Re: Installing headers on a 3rd gen

I have the SLP 1-3/4" w/AI.R., the driver's side was a drop in, but I had to remove the air pump on the passager side and the header just slid in. My only problem is getting the #5, and #7 spark plugs in.

I don't know if there are any "secrets" per se, but I did a few things in an attempt to stave off problems down the line:

* Got a heat shield to go over my starter (had to clearance it to make it fit);

* Bought some plug wire heat shielding for the plug wires;

* Used Stage 8 Locking bolts to attach them to the heads;

* Used a better kind of exhaust gasket (the kind with graphite inserts in an aluminum "frame" - Summit has 'em) to seal them to the heads.

It cost a little extra, but I haven't had any problems since I installed 'em in 2000...

What length stage 8 bolts did you buy? where did you buy them? and what car did you use them on?

i have heard alot of neg on the edelbrock headers. me, i have a set of hooker 2055's and other than killer fitment i can say they dont need a gasket where the Y mounts to the headers and removal if needed is a snap.
one of the engineers in our F.A.S.T. dept installed a set of 2055's on his camaro and said they went in so well it was silly. he just had to remove the starter and it went stright in. the dr side went in from the top.

I'd ditch the Edelbrocks and go with Hooker Headers, & Y-Pipes. With the Y-Pipe Kit you'll even get a midpipe that deletes the Cat. I plan on finishing the job up with a Hooker Catback.
