A.I.R. Pump Will Not Spin

10 years ago I threw my AIR pump belt. Since I was exempt from PA Emissions due to low miles, it has not been a problem. I just never replaced the belt. This year laws changed and as I understand it, if it has pollution control components they must function and be on the car. You don't have to pass the test out the exhaust pipe if you are exempt. I found out my AIR pump is locked up. Thus the reason for the belt missing. What are the odds that one can take the AIR pump apart and free it up so it spins with the belt? Otherwise, where can you get an AIR pump at a reasonble cost. I am trying to keep my car original as possible, therefore I would like to keep the original AIR pump if I can.

you might be able to go inside of it and mess with the bearing or something...But an easier solution is, go to thirdgen.org into the classfied section and post a wanted ad. You can get them cheap. If i still had mine i'd give it to ya, but I don't..sorry...good luck with finding one, shouldn't be too difficult

take the air pump off the carand when you bring it there just tell them it never had one. most emmissions inspectors wont have a clue what emmissions equipment it came with stock. Then afterwards you can just put it back on. The air pump seizing up is a very common problem on 3rd gens. ive owned 4 of them, 3 of them had seized pumps when i got them.

Re: A.I.R. Pump Will Not Spin

^Like Crovax said, AIR pumps seizing up on third gens is EXTREMELY common. That's why when I bought the car with 30k on it, the guy before me had already taken off the belt, lol. So when I rebuilt the car I said "Bye Bye AIR system..".
AIR pumps are VERY expensive though, so if you find one from a friend or a junkyard for cheap your in luck.

That or you can gut it. Pull the cover off of it and beat the guts until all the little pieces fall out

I had to gut mine because I needed to use it as an idler pulley when I had a TPI motor in the car.

Umm, don't you think the emissions label under the hood will give it away? It says AIR/EGR/ETC and gives a hose routing right on the label. That and all the air tubes coming out of the manifolds just might possibly clue someone in as to whether or not the car had AIR or not. Anyone that's ever done any kind of state inspection would know that's there.

Re: A.I.R. Pump Will Not Spin

I replaced my hood last year and the body shop did not salvage my stickers. I no longer have the routing sticker or even the VIN sticker. Besides, the inspection station is the one that told me I need this pump to be working. It does not sound like it is rebuildable and the junk yard could be a crap shoot. At least I'll know that it spins before they ship it or I pick it up. Thanks for the help people.
