Question How many 3rd gens here with LT1?

I'm thinking of getting me a 305 5speed IROC and putting a LT1/T56 combo in it. I'm sure it's been done, what were the results? How easy/hard? How cheap/expensive? I had a 93 Z and I finally wore it out and sold it. I loved the LT1/T56 drivetrain, but I hated the cramped space in the 4th gen. The IROC I had was much easier to work on and I just like the way they look. Whatever comments you guys have would be cool.

I love mine. I can change all eight plugs in about 30 minutes.
Its way cheaper to build a 12 second 3rg gen with an lt1 than with an L98.

I went from a stock 305 tbi so I felt a slight difference (sarcasm). It doesn't cost too much for what you get from it. deffinitely start with a tpi car that is a manual already. the tpi fuel pump is already strong enough but tbi pumps are only good for about 11 psi. There are several people on here that have done it so you can have a good bit of help if you choose to.

I'm currently doing it now. On the link in my sig below, you can find some personal websites on the 'Contact' page that have great info. I don't have any updated pics myself...but then again, I'm not even close to turning the key so to speak.

Do the LT1 headers clear the third gen crossmember just fine? How bout ground clearance with long tubes since the motor sits lower??

You can't use 4th Gen headers in a 3rd Gen. I recommend SLP 1 3/4" as they fit the exhaust ports and work great in the car.

Long tubes...I don't know. I don't want long tubes, so I haven't tried.

So the bolt pattern is the same then. I hope long tubes clear, cause those are what my top choice would be, if not those then mid lengths. And I think for the power I will be making, I will be using the 1 7/8" headers. Hopefully hooker or SLP or FLP makes the ones I need.

I also have done the swap, and im glad i did. Ive had some off the wall problems with it (opti spark, water pump, shift solinoid) but other then that crap i LOVE the car even more now that it has the lt1. It is much ceaper and easier to make an Lt1 go fast then it is to make an l98 go fast. Trust me.

The ports on the lt1 will match up to any 3rd then header, the bolt pattern is the same. I recomend SLP 1 3/4 shortys or the hooker long tubes. Im going with slp because im not going to spend the money on hookers again.

The swap is easy and very well worth it, good luck

I have done the swap and it was well worth it in my opinion. For me the motor was the cheap part. All the little tings that come up start to add up after a while. Things like fuel pump, general maintenance for the motor, performance parts etc. Do the swap you will be more than happy you did.

Well I can't wait to get started on my mine. I'm doing an LT1 383 with either Arao 32V heads or the cheaper route, the AFR 1100's. Ported to hell LT1 intake, and a ProCharger F-1R with twin front mounts for the induction. Should be a runner! I'll keep pics for the updates.

Well my first step is going to find me a suitable car. Surely it will be fairly easy to find a 305/5 speed car that is in decent shape. I'm was going to try to find a TPI car and now that I read the post about the fuel pump, I'm definately going TPI. I can't wait to find a car. Well I guess I better find some money first!! Thanks for all the info!!

I am in the process of doing the swap as well. Mine is taking a lot longer than I expected since money doesn't grow on trees.
I went with the LT1 with the LT4 heads/intake/Hotcam, and 1.6 Pro Magnum Roller Rockers.
