How can I tell which engine is in this car?

Hi, Tom here.

My brother left me an 89 third gen...I just got it into my garage today. It's going to be something I'll be learning on, for sure. Anyway, the sticker on the hood says it's a 5.0 (which engine is that) but my brother said it was a 5.7...so is there a plate or something engraved on the block or the heads or anything that is tell tale of which engine?

The car's body is great, the front clip is cracked and unpainted but otherwise it's relatively clean. The engine... doesn't work. I looked at the coolant and it was sludge. Looked like sand and water mixed and dirtied. The trans (5speed) doesn't have reverse, but who cares :P. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. For the most part, I've only been into small economical cars (neons :P) but recently started modding the neon, but then got the camaro and now I've got a real car to work with. Plus the neon will always be a neon...whereas the camaro defintely will always be a camaro. So any help, thanks.

Since your not currently on I'll post them all. It sounds like you probably have a TPI 305 that looks just like a 350 TPI.
If your 8th vin # digit is:
"E" its L03 V8 170HP
"F" ....LB9 V8 TPI auto.tran 195HP, single cat 5-speed 220HP, dual cat 230HP
"8" ....B2L V8 TPI 240HP but those were all automatic and you have 5-speed I just noticed. So it won't be "8"

The VIN # is located IN the driver side of the windshield at the bottom. Congrats on the inheritance! What color?
