Question Help with transmissions

Im looking into replacing a transmission in an 87 Chevy Caprice Classic with a 350 5.7L engine...My question is, what transmission needs to go into the car? I cant find anywhere what transmission came stock and i cant find information anywhere on what transmissions could be put in as replacment? The transmission thats in there now has R,1,2,D,Overdrive. The reason im thinking of replacing it is because im starting to notice a clunking noise from it and a grinding noise on higher RPMs so im looking into my options so if it goes i can get a tranny for it.
Thanks,
Aaron

A 700R4 should fit. Don't quote me on that. I'll have to check my repair manual.

It's a 700-R4. They're a dime a dozen. My advice is go get one at a junkyard ($100) and get it rebuilt. Then when yours goes you can just throw it in.

The clunk is prolly just the tranny mount...no biggy to fix, but the grind is a whole different story.
