As Greeze stated earlier.....The Fuel pump has a fail safe just in case the relay burns out. The oil pressure sender is this fail safe. although very valuable (if not for it, relay burn out and you are stuck) it can "stick" and make your fuel pump keep running.

Yeah, you guys were right, I just misunderstood. I was looking for something completely separate from the oil pressure sender. I've got the problem solved temporarily. I think the wiring to the relay is bad. The only way I could get it to run is to just leave the sender unplugged. I took a test light to it and found that the yellow, orange, and red wires going to the relay were getting power regardless of whether or not the key was turned on. I'm pretty sure at least one of them is only supposed to be powered with the key on, I just don't know which one.

Replace your sender...I do not think you have a wiring problem. Mine did the same thing......Once I replaced sender...no problems at all. Now you stated up in the paragraph that the only way you can get it to run is to leave the sender unplugged. Did you mean the only way to get the pump to shut off when car is off???

Yeah, I meant that the only way to get the fuel pump to turn off while the car isn't running is to unplug the sender. I just didn't think it would be the sender, it hasn't been a month since I replaced it. I had to get one because the old one was leaking around that o-ring. Hopefully it's still under warranty since it cost me $40.

I have replaced mine 5 times since owning the Formula (9 yrs)....Sucks I know, but if it is an Autozone part, they probably will take it back. I am 99.9% sure that is your problem. Change it out and let us know

I still have the old one. Do you think I could check it by just plugging it in without putting it on the motor?

I have never thought of that.....I wonder if it uses the block as a ground though???? Try it and see. If it doesn't work, then put it in and see.

Great thinking on your part though...I will have to remember that one

I was thinking it might be grounded to the block too. Only one way to find out though. I'll try it out tomorrow and let you know.

Let me tell ya, I`m an auto tech and we have a good customer that has a 87 olds 98 and I put a switch in his yearly and those are delco switch`s, anything aftermarket wont last 3 month`s so that could be it even though it`s new. As far as auto zone parts....Do yourself a favor and don`t buy anything that uses wires or solid state electronics....It`s all 4NJUNK !!!! "product of uza" Hecho in mehico" and so forth....Do you know what this says
Bomba de agwua?? That what every water pump says on the box. Sound like a good part ? They carry wells ign parts and I`ve seen brake lite switch carch fire and melt...Ign modules not working right outta the box. You get what you pay for and for 50 bucks you could have went to the dealer or gm parts direct .com and got it for the same $.

P.S. the switch does`nt need a ground..just pressure to close the contacts.

Well I just went out there and plugged the old switch in and it everything works just fine. The new one has a lifetime warranty, so I'll just go make them give me a new one later.

Yes I do love this messageboard. If it got down to tracing wires I'd just go without an oil pressure gauge. I've got an El Camino that I'm trying to get running at the moment too. Its not cool when both are broken at the same time.
