Help With Engine Swap???

Hey,

I am sure glad I found this forum!

What I have going on here is a "cracked beyond repair" 305 block.

The serial number on the block I have is: 10243878 which shows it to be a 1996-97 305 2 Vortec truck, roller cam, one-piece rear seal motor.

The guys at the junkyards swear that there was never a vortec 305 ever made...

My questions are:

1. Will any one piece rear seal 305 motor work?
2. If I go to the wrecking yard, what car/truck should the motor I need come out of? (Like from a late model Camaro, or 1995 on up chevy truck etc., etc)

I have a lead on a 1988 Pontiac 305, but I have no idea if the cranks are the same at the flywheel etc., etc...

I've already bought one 305 which must have been the earlier style without the one piece seal.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!

I need a little more info . What is your car ? Are you running a carb or injection? The block you have now is a roller block but I can't remember if it is drilled for a fuel pump rod or not . Are you just wanting a block or the whole engine ?

Hi,

Thanks for answering...

The motor actually is in my boat. The serial number id's the engine as the 96'-98' 305 vortec motor.

Because it is in a boat, it is a carb manifold.

I just have no idea what motors will interchange with what I have going on...

I'm pretty sure a 1996 on up truck motor will work but as far as passenger cars, I have no idea what to look for.

Thanks Again!

Oh...

My exisiting block is not drilled for the fuel pump rod.

If I found a motor that was, couldn't I just use a block-off plate?

Thanks!

I would definately be looking for a 96+ vortec 350. It will swap directly with the 305 that came out. It should be the same cost and will have more power.

and yes they made a 305 vortec.

Don't forget that if you replace the block, you'll need to replace at least the cam. Often, also the heads are marine-specific.
And if you go to 350 Vortec, you'll need to upgrade the carb (either re-jet it or replace it).

Keep all the marine accessories, of course, you are not allowed use any automotive accessories on a boat engine (for safety reasons).

Hope this helps.
