Help with 305 topend rebuild/mild build up

I'm in the process of redoing my wifes 1987 z28 and needing opions on parts. Car has about 110k miles and and internal coolant lose. Decided to do a mild build up since most parts need replaced anyway. Will these parts work ok with the stock convertor and what kind of gains would you expect from them.

GM Vortec heads
Performer intake
Performer 600 cfm electric choke carb
Summit cam and lifter set .420/.442 lift .204/.0214 duration at 050 lift
Shorty headers
Catback exhaust

What distribator would you suggest.
Thanks

That will be a nice buildup. I would suggest getting a little bit bigger cam. Something like 208 or 210 duration @.050. Or at least some 1.6 rockers to get some lift. On the vortec heads you are limited to .480 lift, unless modified. As for the distributor, a simple HEI with mechanical weights and vacuum advance will do just fine. Accel used to have one that was about $110. Good luck!!!!

stock distributor will be fine, but u can go ahead and get any basic hei. I'd go with something like the stock lt1 cam. those are pretty good cams for 305's and l98's from what i've seen.

Since you're ditching the computer controlled carb you'll need to ditch the computer controlled distributor as well and then pull the Check Engine light since it will be on constantly. An older style (non-computer controlled) large cap HEI distributor is an easy drop-in replacement. Many are available from the aftermarket.

87? 87......... 87........... 87.............. does that year of engine use a small-cap distributor with a separate coil mounted down on the intake manifold? If so, you'll need to do some minor re-wiring to drop in an earlier large-cap non-computer controlled HEI (2 wires that go to the current remote coil have to get clipped, re-terminated and attached to the earlier style HEI). If you need some help with this rewiring just shoot me an email and I'll tell you what has to go where.
