Hedman headers and hedman y pipe question.

hey,

I purchased Jet hot coated hedman headers for my 87 350. the part number is 68470. They are 1 5/8 tubes and 3 inch collector. Im going to get the camaro specific hedman y pipe also. it says i can retain the stock Cat. this means the stock position correct? also, does the y pipe have a 3 inch out also??

Absolutely GREAT header choice man The y-pipe is actually fairly large tubing (dont remember the exact size), and when I went to match the y-pipe up to the headers it did NOT fit one bit, but hey.. I'm not the exhaust-shop right (I'm sure they will make it fit lol)
When it says it retains the stock cat, I am pretty sure it means the same location.

well it says " for use with header part number 68470 so im pretty sure it will fit. the collector is 3 inches on the headers, but they come with reducers. plus the y pipe can only be used with that header. I'm pretty positive its a 2.5 in and 2.5 out. Does anyone know what the in to the stock Cat is?? i think its 2 or 2.5, pretty sure. just need to double check.

Carlo,

Dont believe everything you read. I had a set of Hedman 68470 headers and the matching "17470" Y-Pipe and it did not fit worth a crap. This was on an '84 Z28 I used to have. I had my exhaust shop recut and fab up the Y-Pipe. The outlet of the y-pipe is 2 1/2 inches.

I also had bolt hole alignment issues with the headers themselves.

If yours fits....then right on....just expect the unexpected.

Good luck.

Yeah Brother....

It did not fit at all. The problem was with the driver side of the y mating to the driver side collector. Did not come anywhere close. Now this was back in 1994 on an RHS Performance engines built 355, however, it still should have fit.

My muffler shop had to cut and re-fab.

I'll lend an ear if ya need to vent in case is does not fit.......

Hehe thanks Frat
But I was holding the pipe up to the headers, and for the LIFE of me could NOT figure out how in the hell it was going to mount

Sounds like to me yall are trying to put this y-pipe onto headers that are firmly bolted to the engine. Sometimes you need to keep all the bolts loose until you have ALL of them started before you tightening them. That will give each header a little bit of movement...sometimes just enough for the y-pipe to bolt up...sometime not

Good Luck

What I mean is the y-pipe is really straight. There is NO WAY a straight piece of steel is going to fit up in the car to a pair of shorties. The only way for the y-pipe to even *touch* the headers is to hold them straight up and down

Yep.....I had all the header bolts loose to the point that the bolts almost fell out. I was a beginner back then (although I am no expert now ) and started out with the header tight......
