Question headers and exhaust!

I have a 87 iroc 5.0 TPI and in the future plan on putting on a new set of headers and exhaust. I don't have the money to do them at the same time. So I'm going to do the exhaust first sense mine is pretty screwed. It's a single cat system and I was thinking about putting true duals on it. What do you guy's think I should go with. I want some awesome sound and good performance. I was thinking when I get the money putting some hooker 1 5/8 inch headers on it. What do you guy's think let me know.

I'd go with a set of SLP 3 in exhaust and later headers. Depending on how deep you want to go in the modification game you might want to go with the 1 3/4 or 1 5/8 headers. Forget about the true duals as far as having more power. Unless you are really having over 500 hp, I wouldn't even go past a single 3 in system. There is no true duals kit so you will have to custom your own system. If you make it out of good materials (stainless steel 304 with mandrel bends), it tends to get pricy. That and you will lower your ground clearence and that would be bad if you have speed bumps or potholes, etc. Besides, from the sound of your post, you will not gain anything, power wise, and you will lose ground clearence and it will cost more unless you use low quality materials. IMO, it is not a good buy.

Aklim took the words right out of my mouth. I don't know why people are hell bent on "true duals". A good mandrel bent 3" exhuast w/ high flow muffler will handle a whole lot. I see people running running 10's w/ 3" exhuast, so I'm sure it will flow whatever you are about to put through it.

I have the el cheapo summit 1-5/8" headers and the Hooker Catback system for our cars and it was definatly money well spent. If you have a little extra cash, spring for the SLPs or so.

I'll second that motion. The 1 5/8 headers (mine are shorty hookers) offer good ground clearance, and a three inch system will flow plenty and support a host of engine modifications.

Unless you are really making serious power, I'd go with the 1 5/8. This is one of the cases where "Bigger is Better" does not hold true.
