Guage cluster questions. Maybe you have the answer.
Are the gauge clusters on these 3rd gen camaros good for taking dumps? Sometimes my water temp gauge goes up to like 240 ish, and if i flick it hard enough it goes back down to just under 220. Today, my oil pressure gauge started bouncing around a little when i was stopped idling in drive to get my tacos at taco bell. I put it in nuetral, and it quit jumping. When i am driving, it seems to work fine. If i nail it, it raises like it should, and when i slow down, it goes down smoothly. Anyone ever have these issues? Thanks.

Yep, I think that at least half of the 3rd gens out there have at least one serious problem with their stock gauges. I have 2 myself. The stock tach is way off (always reads 1000-2000 RPM high) and my speedometer and odometer won't kick in until about 3 to 4 minutes of driving
.
I think the biggest problem is that it seems no one really knows how to fix the problem (unless its wiring or a sensor of course). The only thing I can think to check for is loose or corroded grounds, bad wires, and the sending units for the gauges themselves.
Wish I could help more.

I figured I would'nt be the only one. Im half tempted to just trash this cluster and go after some custom ones I saw online somewhere one time. I may rip it apart and check out the grounds and what not. By the way, my temp sensor is brand new, so it shouldnt be my problem.

I agree, I also think that the only real way to get accurate readings from gauges is to go aftermarket, just like you said. I've seen some people with some custom Autometer gauge set-ups in 3rd gens and they look good, but it does cost some $$$.

That looks awesome but it is kinda pricey. The only thing I would switch is the tach and speedo locations cuz the stock ones are on the other side.

Ya know.. it's funny you mention cluster-"***cs", lol.. my speedo pulsates up and down when driving (like up a few miles an hour, down a few miles an hour). Why do the gauges in 3-gen's stink so bad?
Re: Guage cluster questions. Maybe you have the answer.
I am not sure but I think 85 speedos are cable operated. The variations could mean a sticking cable. A good greasing may take care of that. Replacing it definately should.

I switched to autometer after my engine swap. I did a 5" speedo and tach plus 3 2 1/6" guages. A friend and I just outlined the stock bezel then measured out our own holes and cut it out of plexiglass. Painted the back of it black and it looks awesome, I'll try to find a host for a pic. Guages ran $468 plus the $9 for plexiglass.
