got my 90 GTA YAY!!!!, got some questions

hey I got my 1990 GTA, it`s a L98 350 4spd auto, black on black leather, like all options or pretty freakin close to having them all, I LOVE this car it`s got 188 803 km`s on her it had 184 000 when I bought her oop`s lol, but I`ll drive her ANYWHERE, she go`s like a bat outta hell and gets AWESOME gas mileage, ya i LOVE my GTA oh and I looked up production numbers and if the source was right mine is 1 of 259 Canadian cars i looked it up on www.GTAsourcepage.com

I want to modd it alittle but nothing to bid I want it to look 100% stock just alittle faster so are there any free mods I should start out with??? I`m also thinking of porting the intake and getting Vortec heads and the LT4 hotcam for her too , but anything I do you`ll never see

oh and what gas should you run in a L98???? 87, 89, 91, or 94?? I run 87 right now, am I hurting the engine?? with 87

the engine requires premium. in my LB9 i run 89 and it runs fine. GM reccomends 91 though.

I ran 87 octane in my L98 for years with no ping in the motor at all. It will not hurt anything if your car is tuned and runs without a ping noise. If you are running a Hyperchip (Not worth getting) then you will have to use premium. But otherwise I would use 87. I've been to Canada many times and since you have a higher content of ethynol that could make a difference.

When I put hooker long tubes on my old 89 GTA L98 it droped .4 off my 1/4 mile times. 1.6 RR you can hide the intake is REALLY restrictive I suggest getting atleast slp high flow runner or a mini ram.... you can even do a lt1 intake swap.... they are 10:5:1 compression so 93 octane will work the best. They are torque monsters I use to pull everyone out of the hole with mine on the streets I suggest drag radials..

I don't know about Ontario, but BC allows 1990 GTA's to get collector plates. Cheap cheap cheap insurance. Email me some pictures when you get a chance.

An L98 running anything less than 91 will pre-detontate. Good thing is the knock sensor will detect it and retard the timing so you won't hurt anything.

The compression on the 90-92 speed density L98's I believe is 9.7:1 and the 87-89 MAF L98's is 9.3:1. They all might be 9.3:1 though so don't quote me on it.

You can run 87 in a stock L98, I did it for years. I then made a custom PROM with a little more timing and started running higher grade for increased performance...but a stock chip will happily run 87.

Now if you have something wrong with the car and its not putting the correct amount of fuel in due to a bad sensor reading, then yes it will ping a little. But thats what a knock sensor is for.

Long story short, try 87, if it makes detenation noise, then start checking stuff until you get it to go away. Also check your initial timing to make sure that hasnt been advanced as that would also cause knock on 87 octane
