future of my iroc-z

had a long talk with my buddy tonight hes a avid racer has many 8 second cars. he said what i should do is slowly start new and build a monster motor. starting with a 350 block then getting it bored crank, rods, pistions, heads all worked ,cams, lifters, all new brand spanking new. with all performance items. he said to hold me over with the long wait itll take me to build this to throw on nos on my 305tpi with 373 gears to hold me over. what do you think would you take this route and build the ultimate new motor and play with nos and gears or just cam , head, and manifold up the 305tpi

Build the new motor. The new motor'll be infinately better then the 305 TPI could ever be... better to do it right the first time.

With nitrous your 305'll be pretty snappy anyways, until it blows up. 305's are pretty mean, as far as taking bull****, I've found.

I put an Edelbrock Performer intake($150), Holley 600CFM carb($220), SLP Headers/Y Pipe($350 used but new), Cutout($60), NX Stage 6 Kit with every luxury item possible ($600 used W/ remote opener), 3.73 gears + Posi (out of my old IROC)...

It went 12.80 @ 107.5 it's first time out on sticky tires... If that'll hold you off, go for it That was a RICH 150 jetting also. Goodluck

I also agree...Start building a motor slowly if you have to but make it GOOD. Do it once, do it right. Spend serious money on the powermakers(heads/cam/intake/exhaust/valvetrain)...Don't skimp on the bottom end, but don't overkill it with billet parts if you're not gonna make more than 700-800hp

my plans....take my more or less stock 350 and put a nitrous kit on it....Then save up on the side and build a low compression 383. I think ill need a new block for the power i want to put down so i would need a stronger block (this way i can also build it completly in my spare time no down time from tearing into my 350 block), forged rotating assembly, going to get some reasonably priced heads because there is a guy around here who apparently does incredible port work at a reasonable price (this info is from a guy who has a 94 vette with a race block version of a gn motor that runs consisten 9.7's)....then probably go with a mini-ram intake. Then i can put that engine in my car, it will be making considerably more power then i have now probably get me into the low 12's high 11's....and then i plan on saving all my pennies and buying a super charger and putting it on which should get me into the low 10's. The only problem is i gotta save up for a t-56 and 12 bolt before i can build any of that...

I'm all for superchargers... but for me, nitrous is the better option. The same power, for a fourth of the cost, and its only there when I need/want it... namely: I'm not pissing away gas 24/7.

But go for it. Sounds pretty sweet. I'm sticking to carburated though... Just too damn expensive to try and "cross over". You silly kids and your "technology" and "fuel economy". Real men don't pay attention to gas prices.

HAHAHA im a hypocrit and i know it but i try not to be one all in the same post!!!

I like the idea of a super charger over nitrous because you can hit hp numbers with a small block you could never hit with nitrous. IMO i also am not huge on nitrous because im just too scared of blowing up my motor (at my own mistake i know its completly possible to do it safely). And as far as my choice of super chargers over turbo(s) i just dont like a turbo unexpectedly kicking in while in traffic can be a scary thing when your car suddenly jumps at the car infront of you.

You won't need a stronger block than what you all ready have, but it is a good idea to get a different one to build so you don't have to put your car down.

Have you ever drove or rode in a turbo'd car??? It doesn't just unexpectedly learch forward in traffic.

yeah i have driven a turbo car we have a saab 9000 (92?) and the turbo on that has a little bit of punch.....ive gotten to the point where i pretty much know where its going to kick in but the way its set up is the turbo is only on if youre giving it heavy gas and sometimes you dont think its about to kick in when it does and it speeds up in a hurry....has almost put me into the back of a couple cars....plus superchargers just have more of an even feel to them which i think id like cant say ive ever been in a car with a noticeable supercharger.
