Fuse Box?

I've got a 91 RS and the dome light hasn't worked since I bought it (sucks at night). One day my dad and I got around to lookin' at it and he says the fuse is blown probably. So I go in the book find the right fuse and sure enough its blown. So he gets the same fuse (20 amp I believe) from his spares and we put that in. Light works the first two times I open and shut the door, then it was off again. That one blew so we put a 30 amp one in. That worked a little longer and that blew too! Also I bought a radar detector and it wouldn't work when I plugged it into the cigarette lighter but it worked when I took it back to the store. My dad says that's probably a fuse too. Are these problems common in 3rd Gen F-bodies? Is there a way I can fix it or if not then how much to let a shop do it? Sorry this is so long it's just that it annoy's the shyt out of me.

You have got a short somewhere in your electrical system. Your dome light, horn, power locks, interior floor lights, cigarette lighter and Map lights (if you have them) all run on that fuse I think...not sure with your year model. The fuse name is CTSY (for courtesy). check all your connections to all the things i listed. Probably have a wrie touching something causing it to ground and bust out fuse. Start with lighter, then go with horn....The horn sometimes breaks inside (little plastic pieces that hold spring for horn in place) and the lighter (if previously used alot) could be in need of replacement.

Just a start for you

I have seen lighters go out like non other. You can get them at Discount for cheap. I reccomend a GM replacement though. I am pretty sure that is your problem.

Thanks for the advice. The door locks now that you mention it the door locks only work when I use the alarm button on the car(I don't know how the previous owners rigged it). And the horn doesn't work either since before I bought it. From the way the cover on the steering wheel looks it seems as though a previous owner has done something in the steering column. The reason I say that is b/c just looking at the steering wheel you can tell that it's not fitting all the way around or something. Some of the white plastic from the steering column is exposed at the edges. When we looked at the car before my dad said that there were no wheel well liners on the car (the front of the car was dropped almost to the ground in the front so they must have taken those out to make space for the tires). With that exposed area in the vicinity of the fuse box, is it possible for rain water to be splashing up in there helping to cause a short? Thanks again for the replies.

That doesnt necessarily mean that the previous owner messed with your car. There are supposed to be flaps sticking up on each side of the steering wheel on 91 and 92 Camaros. As for the white sticking out, thats probably wear and tear, it happend on my 92 RS and I'm living with it for now. I havent been able to put anything in the cig lighter EXCEPT the lighter itself w/o blowing the fuse... maybe this is common in third gens? I dont know.
