Smog pump question

I think my smog pump is about to go and someone told me I could just pull the pulley off of it temporarily and disconnect the hoses. I know about the hoses but how exactly does the pulley disengage?

You can just take the belt off. and it will be fine. or you can take the hole thing off. I took my off years ago with no problems.

Just for s**ts and giggles. What the heck does the smog pump do anyway? I know it pumps air into the exhaust but is that it? Can it be turned into a vacume pump for the crank case or does it already do that? Please don't make fun of me, I'm just trying to learn something.

Actually, I really don't remember what it does. I was just thinking about it and I thought it pipes the unburned fumes back into the car to be burned but then I just thought about that, thats what the EGR does right? But now that I think about it again, I don't think this car has an EGR. My other car has MPI which has an EGR but I don't think it has a smog pump. So someone correct me if im wrong, but doesn't the smog pump serve a similar purpose as the egr?

You should have a smog pump under the A/C pump. I think the "GM" term is AIR PUMP. You are correct about the EGR piping unburned gases back to be burned again. You should have both. My 91 z28 had both from the factory. Are you using the same tbi injection as the 305? I'm not totally sure on the tbi car though. I use to have a 91 rs and if I remember correctly it had both.

smog pump

Hey I have a 87 iroc 350 and i took of the smog pump and blocked off the hose. i could tell a noticible hp diffrence and i also lost about 18lbs by taking off the smog pump and brackets. i have no problems with any computer codes. so i would give it a shot.

I have the superram unit and it is not that bad. I slotted the bolts so they could be bolted in with a small screwdriver from the top. Later I drilled out all the screw threads and helicored the runners at the bottom. When I screw the screws in, I use locktite to make sure they stick.

I haven't decided yet. I have a friend that can get me a carb setup real cheap so Im considering doing that for now and later going to TPI. Right now this TBI is killing me.. Its running like crap and I can't seem to get the IAC to work right.. the old one was seriously messed up and the book said to set the spindle to the same position, so I did, and it still runs like crap. If I set the spindle at a certain position and leave the IAC unplugged it works fine except when I first start the car up it tries to die and at an idle it idles really high.. Don't know what to do to fix it.
