fuel injection question?
fuel injection question?
okay, i have a 92 rs with the stock 305 (TBI)..
i'm about to put in a 350 bored .30 with 305 heads. but i'm concerned with it not getting enough fuel. but i just cant change it to carb without a new computer chip (i think) . um, what can i do to the stock fuel injection system to make it dump more fuel?

That or get a Holley 670cfm throttlebody and a chip to match (the Caprice chip should run it fine).
If you change to carb you'll have to change a lot of other stuff too. You'll need a non-computer distributor, a carb intake and the carb itself, you'll have to rewire the fuel pump because the computer will no longer turn it on, and you'll have to do something about the speedo because thats run through the ECM too. Also you'll have to regulate the fuel pressure down to 5-6psi. There are probably other changes that I've forgotten.

A carb adds fuel to the air using mechanical means...pressure differentials and rod and jet sizing and such thing. Fuel injection does it all electronically via sensors, injectors, and a computer to control it all. Carbs do not have chips because they do not have computers.
There is an exception though: The CC Quadrajet. For a while GM was using carbs that were partially computer controlled (hence the CC). It was the system that led up to fuel injection, and its a carb with a computer. I personally don't like them but there are people who swear they're the best thing thats happened to cars since the wheel.
Hope that helped.
