Fiberglass is the principal material in SMC. What makes the SMC process different from the pre-1984 Corvettes is the use of polyethylene film between layers of fiberglass matting to prevent the structure from de-laminating. That's basically it.
Resins, catalysts, gelcoat and so forth have always been used to create a fiberglass structure. You cannot built anything out of fiberglass without these components.
You are confusing compounds with composites. Carbon fiber is a composite, SMC is a compound. (SMC = Sheet Molded Compound.)
Principal structural material in SMC is fiberglass.
