exhaust/headers question

does anyone make "bolt on" headers? or do you have to buy a "Y" pipe with every vendor?

if no.... why in the blue hell has no one thought this up yet ?

or .. if I buy shorty headers or hugger, that have no o2 sensor. is there a drill and bolt o2 sensor addon?

I am not a rich man, but I want bang and I want to pass emissions in houston.

(rich means ... dont have money to invest in stuff that does not save money)

do all shorty headers have the same Y pipe fit? or atleast a majority? this I want to know to reduce the odds of buying useless junk online

Re: exhaust/headers question

The reason they don't make just headers is becuase the y-pipe is actually a very big bottleneck also. Why put new headers with a stock, restrictive y-pipe. Let me give you some advice though. STAY AWAY FROM FLOWTECH HEADERS. They are affordable but you get what you pay for. I hate them on my 86. They didn't fit right and knocked on the frame rail.

What? They do too make "just headers"

Summit shorty headers
Hooker Competition Shorty Headers
...theres more but I dont feel like looking them up.

But you are partly right. I believe the reason that you cant use aftermarket shorty headers with a stock Y-Pipe is because the Y-Pipe attaches with two bolts, rather than aftermarket which attach with 3, in different locations...so you wouldnt be able to bolt them up.

But it would be a good Idea, the Y-Pipe is even more of a restriction than the heads, as stated. Look at this picture:

That is what your stock Y-pipe looks like where it meets. Think I'm lying? Check it out for yourself if you are extremely bored one day.

So, you can buy just headers, and buy a separate Y-pipe from another vendor (flowtec pipe, hooker shorties) ...this is often cheaper than buying a set with Y-pipe from say...edelbrock.

Re: exhaust/headers question

That is what I meant to say. You can get just headers but trying to find a pair that will fit the stock y-pipe is futile.

Re: exhaust/headers question

Edlebrock headers for our cars come with y-pipe and air tubes but they arent the best headers but they are better than manifolds

Re: exhaust/headers question

Yeah, but for the price, there are better alternatives...by far. Alternatives like...hooker headers, flowtec y-pipe...and a new roller cam...and lots of beer for when the job comes.

STAY AWAY FROM EDELBROCK TES HEADERS!!!!! I was GIVEN a pair of these for my '85. I put them on and had nothing but problems, all sorts of exhaust leaks from the gaskets, y-pipe, etc. Basically if it could leak, it did. Oh and it was next to impossible to change the #1 plug w/ these headers, veeeeery tight clearance for those. I would not use these again if someone paid me to use them.

as far as just welding up an o2 sensor, i guess you could do it. just get a half-coupling in the correct thread size and have at it, no gaurantee that it will be in the correct place or anything but i'm sure it could be done.

Re: exhaust/headers question

What brand are they? They kinda look like my summit shorties. Used? If so, you might have wanted to just buy them from summit, brand new for 85$, shipping and all.
