Engine ran rough, now missing badly
Engine ran rough, now missing badly
Hi Everybody,
I was leaving the movies the other night in my 88 Camaro 5.0 THROTTLE BODY Fuel Injection and it started running very rough. Did not want to idle. had to drive home in 3rd (700-r auto Trans). Finally I pulled over and it was making a metalic tick sound and then quit. Waited a little bit, then it did start but was missing on one cylinder. Checked plug wires and all seem connected, but still has a dead miss. When I start it now, it starts but eventually starts missing again. I pulled off one valve cover thinking I had cracked a rocker or something, but all looks good. Not sure if I should pull the other one. I think that metal sound was the car running severely out of time. It must be an intermittant electrical problem. Any idea what might be going on?? Or what I need to replace??
Thanks,
AL

Re: Engine ran rough, now missing badly
Re-check your plug wires and make sure that none of them got burned through. A spark will arc through a burnt plug, causing a misfire and a rough ride/stalling.
If that isn't the case, then unfortunately you have a number of possibilities on your hands as previously mentioned. Sounds like you should replace your spark plugs first, and if that isn't the fix, then you are going to have to look into the internals of the engine. A bent or broken pushrod would be my second guess, but it could be anything. I would set aside a weekend and take off the valve covers, and intake and inspect everything thouroughly.
