Many moons ago, I had one in an '87 IROC. That is the Hurst Dual Gate shifter for 3rd gens, comes with the plate, the shifter & hardware. It also is one of few aftermarket shifters that use the stock cable, which keeps it shifting much smoother (ie: stock feeling) vice cables such as B&M's. I think it went for around $170 or thereabouts.

I have it in my IROC. It looks stock and fits as low as the original auto. shifter. It is in the perfect place to rest your right hand on it while cruising. I love it. And yes it is specifically for a third gen direct fit.

I have no idea where to get it now. I bought mine last year from Summit for $239. It is part #HUU-2920000

Its not a direct fit as the stock piece includes the rectangle around the shifter, and the ashtray. The Dual-Gate shifter only has the rectangle. You have to cut the ashtray part away from the stock unit and reinstall it separately.

This model of B&M looks just as good installed. And is still available. It's part # 130-80692 from Jegs and fits 82-92 Camaro for $202.00, but will not fit 88-92 Formula's.

Yes the megashifters are pretty cool, had one of those in a different fbody as well, but there are a few differences that separate those two shifters for some, one would be that the Hurst dual gate utilized the stock shifter cable and shifted very easily, and the megashifter uses that heavy duty b&m cable and sometimes, can bind a little bit and/or be a little harder to maneuver through the gears. I love that shifter, but for me, it didn't work out as smooth as Hurst's. Also, I either had park or 1st gear access, not both due to odd adjustment of the cable/shifter. I'm sure if I messed w/it long enough I could have got it to work just fine, but opted to have 1st gear and no park gear due to a reverse manual valve body.
