Door Hinges

Door Hinges
Ok, I'm sick of my creaking loose driver’s side door on my 88 that rubs the ground effects and drips white fiberglass dust allover the outside of the black car. My lower door hinge is completely shot. Where can I find a rebuild kit for just the lower hinge? They seem to be everywhere for the upper hinge, but my upper is still tight. I need a new pin bushings and guide wheel for the lower hinge. Any help would be awesome.
Thanks,
Pat

My doors sux on my '87 too. I have to slam them shut and it sounds like a shotgun going off. I am planning on getting it painted soon so I am just going to have the body shop do whatever they can for the doors while they are at it.

Re: Door Hinges
OK did some looking. Turns out both my hinges (upper and lower) are wasted. The lower hinge can be rebuilt with a standard GM pin and bushing kit available in the help section of most auto parts stores. The upper hinge requirers a new hinge to be bolted or welded on or a kit from one of the the aftermarket manufacturers. Now looking at what is in these kits and there price ($140-210) for both doors made me cringe. I took a crapload of measurements and hit up McMaster-Carr for some SAE 841 bushings and some hardened steel shoulder bolts enough for both doors for the tune of $10.40. I'm going to give it a shot this weekend and if it works I'll post some pics and part numbers

And yes the upper and lower hinges are welded to the doors from the factory

Re: Door Hinges
Well I did the drivers door and it came out awsome. I'll put together a website with pictures and part numbers when I finish reformating and upgrading my computer.
Total for both doors
14.40 McMaster Carr: bushings and shoulder bolts
10.03 Autozone: lower hinge rebuild kits
18.37 Ace Hardware: misc washers nuts and bushings (would have been 1/3 of the cost from McMaster but I needed the stuff asap as my car was sitting in the drive with no door on it)

Unfortunately, just lower pin and bushings for the bottom weren't enough. My door was so bad it had eroded the metal the pin rested on. The "outer" shell of the hinge. Hope only your bushing is toast.

Re: Door Hinges
I replaced the driver door (upper) hinge on my IROC back in the day and it was a PITA ! The whole door had to come off and then you have to drill out the tack welds and beat/air chisel/air hammer it the rest of the way off.
Damn those doors are heavy.
Good Luck yall
