Post do I need a new starter?? Please read

It seems like I need a new starter but want to make sure before buying one. When I turn the key to start, it'll turn for a split second, stop, turn, stop, and on and on. Seems like the starter doesn't have enough power to turn the engine. Do I need a new starter or is something else wrong like is there starter gear pressing up too hard againts my flywheel. Also, could it be that my starter wire is thin or I don't have a good ground?

Thanks for any help, going to drag race next friday and would love to get this thing up
