Cold Air Intake?
Cold Air Intake?
Alright, about 3 months ago I bought my first Camaro (91 Camaro RS, TBI). I've been searching mod sites and I haven't found any cold air intakes for TBI Camaro's. Do cold air intakes exist for my car outside of the homemade stuff? I know its tbi, but I've found an article on 305 tbi motors w/ a couple of setups that might help make this car into a fairly decent contender. Also, my car is spinning way too much on takeoff. I have a torque advantage on my friends modded Camaro (1999 V6) but he still gets me off the line cause I'm still spinning. Any suggestions on a bone stock Camaro?

having owned an 87 for 4 years and trying to do every possible mod i could find, i dont' think there is any cai for the TBI cars. why don't you want to make one yourself? with as much space as there is under the hood of a 3rd gen (compared to 4th gens) you should have no trouble.
and to stop spinning...is it a peg leg? first thing would be to get a posi. either install one or search and find a z28 or transam with decent gears in a junkyard and swap axles.
you could also try some good tires, that makes all the difference in the world

Thanks! It is a peg leg and the posi would eliminate the infamous "one wheel peel." This is the first car I've bought so I'm new to modding. Is it difficult to replace the axles yourself or should I let someone else do it?

Thanks, I don't much about axle swapping. I'll have to ask my dad if he'd be able to do it w/ what we have at the house. He's got more smarts than I do when it comes to working on cars. When I was a kid he had a '69 Camaro he used to work on. And after that he had a '73 Chevy Nova w/ a Vette engine in it (Can't remember the year I'll ask him). He sold it cuz he was tired of workin on it and wanted a four door car. Needless to say I was pissed when he sold it (I was 15 turning 16 at the time and I was hoping I would get the car). Anyway, if he can't do the work I guess I'll have to save up the $$$ for someone else to do it. Thanks again for the post!
You can get an SLP 4th gen take-off posi for like $100. And since you have a '91 you've already got 28 spline axles and it'll fit right in. You don't even have to realign the gears. However, if you have an automatic trans behind that tbi305 then you also have 2.73 gears. In which case, you need to change gears anyway. Easiest thing to do is to find a 3.23 or 3.42 4th gen rear.....it's a direct bolt in and will already have posi and most likely disc brakes too.
Changing rears isn't that hard, you'll need a friend for the heavy lifting but basically it's just unbolt the old one and bolt the new one in. You'll need a new e-brake cable and a brake proportioning valve for the disc rear brakes, and you'll have to bleed the brakes when you're done but's it's a one-day swap easy enough. I would get new U-joints while you're at it since they're cheap and you have to take the driveshaft out anyway. Also it's a good idea to change the gear oil while the new rear is still out of the car...much easier that way. Don't forget the GM posi additive.

Thanks again, from what you told me it doesn't seem that difficult replace, it'll just take some time. The RS is an automatic w/ the 273 gears so like you said I might as well change the gears too while I'm under there.
I just picked up an extra cleaner assembly from a seller for $10 - I plan on doing a little work and making my own. Using plastic flexible guttering pieces from Home Depot and a little patience, I'm going to attempt a dual snorkel setup piping cold air in from below, instead of trying to feed from that very small crack under the lip of the hood.
I'm one who has lotsa time, and little cash lol.
