m/c solenoid circuit open or grounded. what is an the m/c solenoid and what does this code mean/what sensor needs to be replaced? any help would be appricated

 

23 Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) sensor
Faulty MAT sensor.

Faulty or loose wiring and/or connections to the MAT sensor.

M/C would be mixture control solenoid on a carburetor car. The book you're using is outdated. The correct problem on your car is described by 1987IROC350 above. The wiring for your MAT sensor is shorted or open, or the sensor has failed.

 

make sure the sensor is plugged in(it is the one in the bottom of the air cleaner)
