Most engine builders use between 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Some racers like to stay under the 1/2 turn, but that requires adjustments more often.
Be careful, alot of engine builders will play around with lash to get more lift, or mellow a bigger cam, it's dangerous NOT to get the plunger centered in the lifter by going a minimum of 3/4 turn, a full turn is prefered by most.
