Cat & Muffler smoking

The car is an 87 Z with tpi. There was smoke coming from both the cat and muffler. There was a good amount of smoke. It seemed to be coming right off the muffler and cat. Any ideas why that would happen? We just got done replacing the intake manfiold gasket but it started to smoke a couple days before we messed with anything. When we took it for maybe a 10 min test drive the car ran rough and lacked power. It also stalled on us a couple times. It does smell like its running a little rich. Any help is appreaciated. Any ideas on what is causing this?

I drove it around tonight for like 7 min and got the temp up to 220. I checked the cat out but it was not glowing. I did notice some poping noises while I was checking it out with the car running in park.

You've got an oil leak dripping down from the intake or valve covers onto the exhaust. Instant mosquito killer. Recheck your work- you've got a leak somewhere.

Re: Cat & Muffler smoking

weird, I will check for leaks when I get home but so far nothing seems to be leaking. I did losen the valve cover during the gasket install so I will check that also. If oil is dripping how is it making its way back to the muffler to smoke? And the smoke isnt coming out of the tips. It seems to be coming from the ends.

Another symptom is the sometimes the car is hard to start. It will take a couple cranks to start it up and if you dont pump the gas pedal a little it will stall. What are some symptoms of a blown headgasket? Oil doesnt look milky.

Re: Cat & Muffler smoking

What color is the smoke that is coming out?

Is the muffler rusting through, and the smoke is coming out there, or is it only coming out where the tips are attached (bad welds maybe)?
