The solenoid is the smaller of the two.

ok reading over the past replies again that you left. You know the big wire that goes to the starter and the the other end goes to the battery? Well take that red wire that you don't know where it goes to and strip some insulation back and hook it to the same place on the starter that the one that goes to your battery is on. You should now have ignition power.

I have both and Haynes doesnt have the schematics like Chilton. That is what I used to rewire my engine and accessories. Believe me that was a chore and I just finished.

Yes you are right Haynes does have them too...But, I used Chilton cause the schematics are more define and make more sense. But to each is own...use what you think is best. Good Luck!!

I'm not saying Chilton's isn't better we use Chilton's and Helm's at our school. It's just I'm only 14 and when I have to buy my own manual wiht my money, I can't really spend $100 on a manual. So far the Haynes has beeen a good manual so I like it.

But to each is own.....
Agreed.

Actually, the red wire *is* connected to the post that that battery is connected to. It is inside the harness connecting it to the battery post. But where does the red-wire from the *battery post* lead to?

seeing you have both headlights and interior dome light (neither of which run off of ignition power) I would say it runs up to your iginition switch or to a fuse block then to your ignition switch. Maybe everything is connected and you just have a bad ignition switch.

Re: Car wont start.. no ignition power....

I had the same problem. The only thing that would work was the head lights. My ignition switch was bad.It is located up under the dash on top of the steering shaft.I have had to replace 3 ignition switch. This last time my turning signals, fans and heater motor would not work.I didn't think it was the ignition switch because i had replaced it 7 or 8 months ago.So i had gm dealer to check it out.The gm dealer charged me $68.00 and said it was the ignition switch.I didn't think that was the problem but i put one in and it fixxed my car.My rpm gauge would always mess up or stop working right before the switch would go out.I hope this helps.

Re: Car wont start.. no ignition power....

But I know for a fact that the red wire is CUT IN HALF, lol. The only half i can find is the half that is connected to the battery-post on the starter. What I need to know is where is the other connecting-point for that red-wire?

BUT.. on a side note, last year, right before I took the engine out, I had to tug on a bundle of wires behind the carb. in order for the ignition-buzzer and everything else to come on. What the hell could be causeing that?

Matt...are you sure that that wire is not pink?...schematic shows a pink wire not red. Mine has a pink wire that almost looks red...and the pink wire feeds into your ignition and gauges.

^Oh, maybe it *is* pink, I really cannot tell. But if there is not red-wire, then I guess it is
But that *pink* ( ) wire runs upwards thru some plastic-casing or what? Where is that plastic-casing located?

Ok..lokking at your '85 schematic I see that a purple and black wire connect to the starter. The wire that controls your gauges is pink/blk. you probably need to follow the wiring harness from underneath your dash to the engine compartment to see if that is the wire you cut in half. sounds like it is to me. Ill send you the trhee schematics that I think will help you find the wire via email.

Re: Car wont start.. no ignition power....

Thanks for the schematics Mas! But DAMN are they confusing :head-scratch smiley here:

Do you know where the actual wiring runs to the starter though?
