Car wont start.. no ignition power....

Well, i put the engine back in. The ONLY thing that gets power is the headlights and dome lights. The ignition buzzer wont come on, i get no stereo power, no blinkers and wipers, etc. I was dicking around and noticed that the red wire on the starter is cut in half, and touching the starter or the frame (dont remember). What is the red-wire for, and could that be the problem? If not, what *could* be the problem?

Thanx,
Matt

red is normally power wire and black is always ground. Ya your starter might need power to work

Lol, I dont mean *just* the starter gets no power; the ignition buzzer doesn't come on, I dont get fuel/heat/oil readings, no stereo power etc. I also dont have the radiator sensor, head-heat sensor, or the oil sensor hooked up; could that be the problem or no?

Check your fuse box. Normally that would be the starting point.

Re: Car wont start.. no ignition power....

The starter is usually a juntion point for all of your powers. Sometimes the run the battery wire to it (of course) your alternator wire to it and your feed going up to your ignition switch to it. So if that red wire is cut in half it could very possibly be your feed going up to you igniton switch. If you really wanted to you could ohm it out and make sure it goes up there. If it were me though I would just hook it up to your starter where your power wire for your starter goes and see what happens.

Already tried to no avail

But it's weird. Several people, including my friend helping me w/ my rebuild, say that everything gets it's power thru the starter. But then some other people say that is the most retarded thing they have ever heard

The problem is, I can't find the other half of the red wire I only have a little chunk tht is still intact w/ the starter.

BTW.. in that plastic harness that connects to the alternator, how many wires run thru the plastic sheathing? One or two?

There should be a purple wire with a small round loop connect that goes to your starter. The red one goes to the positive side of course...and try connecting the negative from your battery to the motor. Cause I had the same problem. Mine for some unknown reason would not have any power whatsoever when the negative from the battery was connected to the starter. I connected it to the motor and wow!! I had power...try it!!

^I dont quite understand your post masiroc566, could you re-word it or something?
But I was looking, and there is a black wire that goes from the positive terminal of the battery to the starter, and there is a red wire that is coming out of the harness on the starter, but it is just free-hanging. WHat should I do with it?

Re: Car wont start.. no ignition power....

you have a digital cam you can take some pictures and post up here for us? Would could probably tell you a little better where things go. Look around for that other red wire. It has to go somewhere. What part of the starter is that red wire coming off of? Also you said you have a black wire that is coming off the battery to the starter. you sure the battery is hooked up right? Sorry don't mean to sound stupid or anything. If you could take some pics it would be a lot of help.

No, pics are out of the question. I can't get a hold of the camera
But there is a black wire that goes to one of the posts, directly to the battery. This wire runs along the wheel-well (engine-bay side), and hooks directly into the positive cable on the battery.
There is one other wire, but I dont know what color or what post, and then there is this red-wire cut in half. My friend says something about it going to the solenoid to the starter or some bullsh*t, I'm not too sure.

Get yourself a chilton's manual. It will give you a wiring schematic for your vehicle. There you will be able to find the problem your stating and resolve it.

Right; but *where is the solenoid*, lol. I know it is part of the starter, but I dont know which is which.
Is the actuall *starter motor* the one w/ the two larger posts on it?
