Cam ? for TPI
Cam ? for TPI
Just wondering about cam selection for a TPI. Where does the happy medium end for the LSA? I've heard that 110* is the lowest you want. Any other input for this? I was looking at a cam with 110 * LSA, but I want to make sure it's a good usable cam first. Available specs were Straight .555" lift and 230 dur. @ .050, 110* LSA.
Thanks.
Thanks.
112 is realy where ya wanna stop at. if your looking for something you dont have to do any tuning and will make the most of headers and exhaust, mild plenum mods like cutting the lil humps behind the TB and air foil, a comp 08-300-8 is the way to go. 206/210 450/480 112. a lil bigger is the 08-302-8. 210/220 480/480 112, this one reqs tuning. i have this in my 305 and its quite impressive. i have direct experience with both of these cams is why i sugguest them.

I've got a moderate crane cam (not installed), but I can get a great bargin on the other. Solid roller for $125. It will see little street, so I was thinking let's see what it can do, but I was afraid the 110 would be too much for the TPI. I'm about an inch away from fitting an entire LT1 top end on it. 3/4's of the way on an LT1 intake conversion. Working on it for a year until someone beat me to it, then I stalled out. Now I'm determined to do heads and all. That should wake the bitch up some.

Take it all out, sell it piece by piece then stick a BBC in it
.
While you have the trans out for a rebuild your gonna need a 3,000 stall as well.
That cam you posted specs of is way too big for a TPI motor (been there, blown that up). Def. agree on not going lower than a 112 LSA,110 will be really hard to tune and get it to idle worth a damn. If you were to take all that restrictive TPI stuff off there and sell it and buy a carb, intake, and dist THEN you could use that camshaft w/ good results. But then you would need major head work or new heads b/c of the valve guide to retainer clearance.

Anything more than 210 intake duration at .050" and less than 112 LSA is going to REQUIRE custom chip tuning to get it to idle and run correctly. Thankfully with items like the Moates Ostrich you can plug into the computer and get on-the-fly flash tuning like an LT1.
Dont even bother with a camshaft unless you're swapping the heads, too. The heads will only take about .480" lift max, and they have 20 year old springs and valve seals on them, too.
