cam lobes

cam lobes

i had a stock lt1 cam in my motor and slid it out for a slp 51005 cam when i had them next to each other the slp one seemed to have fatter lobes (duration) but the lt1 lobes seemed taller (more lift) whats going on? also both being roller the stock lt1 was billet but the slp one wasnt (althought hte lobes were polished unlike a flat tappet ) is that normal too at this point im really confused

What exactly is your question?? The lobes on the LT1 cam look bigger because they are slimmer and have a smaller duration. If you want to know for sure get the lift numbers off both cams and Wahlah.

well i know the lt1 cam has like a 447 459 lift while the slp cam should have a 495 502 lift .... so the lobes should be bigger correct ? well it seems like there not im wondering if maybe the cam isnt what it is although it is clearly labled on the back of the cam it self and it new in the box maybe im jsut worring to much

Roller cams can be funny in that regard. You can have higher lift but shorter duration and that makes the lobes appear physically smaller because the shorter duration makes them look narrower. Lift is very hard to tell by eyeball because you are only talking about maybe 10 or 20 thousandths of an inch. In your case it amounts to 50/1000 or 1/20 of an inch--too hard to reliably measure without calipers.

I remember thinking similar thoughts when I replaced my 86's peanut cam (.350 and .385) with a Crane PowerMax 260 (.427 and .454). But I could sure tell the difference on the Go pedal when it was all buttoned back up!

If your paranoid that you got the wrong cam get a set of calipers and measure the lobes.

hey guys i know this thread is old but i thought someone could help me. im new here but i need some help i have a slp cam 51005, i called them and no help from them. the prob is i need to know the complete cam specs so i can get springs to match the cam. i know the lift but i am going too install this in my l98 350 with aluminum vette heads 10088113 with flat tops, so someone please help me i have been all over the net and cant find anything on this cam except this thread.....

holy old *** thread batman .... but if i recall the cam was made by comp and the grind number should be on the bottom but specs should be online somewere off the top of my head they were like 498/502 lift 218/224 duration

see i have the lift/.495/.502 dur/218/224 114/Lc i need correct seat pressure open & closed so i can by the correct spring kit for this cam. does anyone have a link for this info. what i need is a cam card so i can degree the dam thing. i will check comp's wed site. but i think i'm gonna need more help?
